If they want to make engine rules changes, they should switch to a spec sealed engine package like other spec series IMO. IT is a builder's class. SM is a Spec class.

People have ways to get past sealed motors. Ive seen it in karting and heard about it in SRF (not sure if really true or just people finding excuses)

The pro engines blow up more due to state of tune rather than parts aging. You tweak everything to the last iota if one little thing goes wrong, it's kablamo. Still though, it's a pretty reliable little lump. Availability? Try and get a 1.6 long nose now. ;) Most of the cores from the older engines have well over 100k and they just wear. This kind of rule helps guys like us that are on a budget. As for sealing, it adds more costs to the guys that are equipped and able to do the work. I've run in a sealed engine class and it chaps my hide to have to pay a few hundred to some one for something I could do myself. There are plenty of ways to check compliance other than sealing.

I just went and looked it up at MSM for reply to Jerry. A 1.6 longnose, B61P-02-300 is US$3100. And it's backordered. Still not a bad deal. As a comparison, stock GM 350 crate $1500, stock CR125 shifter kart engine $2500, KZ2 shifter kart engine, $4500.

Keep costs down, allow the GM 350 for the 1.6 cars. The 99's already have them...... :D

Disclaimer: The above opinion is extremely biased since the opiner currently races only a 1.6 SM. The opinion is sunject to change if and when he obtains a different year SM.

My initial reaction is > fudge No.

My reasons:

1. I can get a 1.6 for $500 off craigslist or a JDM importer (Atarco for example).
2. I have seen absolutely no evidence of lack of 1.6 motors or parts. Prove it if you can.
3. $3,500 for a crate motor ain't bad and I'm sure the quality is excellent. In my brief time in SM, I've seen and read of more than a few "PRO" motors blow up w/ not much use.
4. I suspect that building the motor would cost about as much as a crate motor. I remember reading ad nauseum on the old site about how building a motor was much more expensive than buying a crate.

I am missing the logic train on the argument you are putting forth. I don't see how any of your four bullet points affect the question at hand (allowing overboring)

A sealed Spec Miata engine is a completely different consideration, and one that I beleive we should seriously be considering before the cost of the arms war destroys the popularity of the class.

Just my $0.02

Jerry you are showing your age. Mazdacomp now charges almost 3500 for a crate motor. Guess you missed the memo.

I must have gotten in before a significant price increase this spring. Actually, when I ordered mine, it was one of two already being shipped from Japan when the earthquake & Tsunami struck Japan. I don't know how Mazda's supply chain was affected, but that disaster had to hurt. But I really haven't seen any significant increase in other parts I buy from MazdaSpeed on a routine basis.

And how can I not show my age, they don't sell Greecian Formula in 5-gallon buckets.

Dropping my 1.6 off at the builder today. Assuming we go forward (or don't) with this, any idea of when a decision will be made?

If we decided today, it would not be legal until 2012 regardless as it is a rules change.
