Alright well my results aren't to pretty. I have decided to not waste my time and do a complete rebuild. I have a guy that does all my machine work that I think will turn out to be a good strong build. How much am I looking at spending for new parts? Like new bearings, gaskets, etc.. hoping the block/rods/pistons/head are all in reusable condition.

If you are going to pay someone to do a full rebuild you may want to check and see what a lightly used rebuild or even an older pro engine from some of the known quantities around these parts. For now you can't do an overbore (or even under on the crank) to be within the rules so if you need more than bearings, rings and gaskets might make sense to look at other options. Depending on the condition of the head core, you may be better off getting a used pro caliber head than rebuilding stock. If your guy is any kind of a machinist he should be able to cut the head to SM spec but by the time you have him cut it, replace what is worn you are only a couple/few hundred from getting a pro head from a known quantity.

A couple of tips...

The HLAs can be expensive. There is a KIA HLA that is the same part number for about 1/5th the price. I got mine from Bruce at PartsDinsoaur.com.

The front oil pump seal and the pickup tube gasket (strainer) don't come in the gasket kit. You need to order them separately.

New valve train with cams, just over a grand. About 700 without cams.

Short block rebuild with OE equivalent parts (not legal) just under 200 plus gaskets.

Short block rebuild with KIA HLA and MSM QEM parts, about 500 plus gaskets.

Keep in mind that you can buy a Pro head for about $1,000.00.

What KIA car does this part come from? Do you happen to have the part number? I actually work at a KIA dealer and this will work good for me.

Yup. All are bad, pretty common at that mileage. You'll be amazed how quiet the engine is with good HLA's.

There are some Kia lifters made by Mazda much more affordable. The search engine is your friend.

Partsgroup has them for $22.00 each.

Some members have reported finding Kia lifters #247-12-101 for as little as $10.00 each.

Good luck

Bruce at partsdinosaur.com is a great guy. Top notch service and great prices. HLAs are $6.95 each.

My understanding is that they are the same 30mm HLA as in the Rio and Sephia.

Bruce is good people. I was getting stock SBC and Olds parts from him over the last few years. Some of it wasn't listed on the site but if it's an OEM replacement part chances are he can get it for most any make.

Whatever you do, don't get tempted to buy one of those $99 ebay sets of everything that goes in the engine. I did once...once. :banghead: :shame: Several of the gaskets aren't even close to the oem ones. They do fit, but if you compare the Mazda ones with the crap ones you'll see the difference in a hurry. For example the head gasket is 10x as thick and made of some asbestos metal blend so if you actually care about things like deck height you will be disappointed.

:offtopic: (Yeah for bringing back some of the old emots!!!) :rockband:

I think I can get OEM parts from the local Mazda dealer with discounts if I go through my dealership. I feel like tearing down the engine and starting from bottom up this weekend, rain rain rain so what else to do than sit in my shop and tinker with the engine/trans. I will probably hit up the track tomorrow and get some more advice from MER.

Do you think with 200k miles the cylinder walls will have to be bored out and just wasting my time/money doing so since I can't bore

Justin, without thinking motor size I was answering your question for HLA's.

From what I'v heard/read about Chris I'd take him up on his offer if he was down the road from me.

Now it's off to the Runoffs in the am to pick on Drago. :peace1:

I will take any offer given to me, if it means hauling the car up to Allen I may just do it. I feel a rebuild is necessary as most of you do, I will get the engine tore down asap and hopefully find out i can salvage the main parts.

Well everything is out of the car, so tempted to go get me a hard top to install my miatacage cage!

Top end is off and I am amazed at the bottom end. Cylinder walls have no sign of ware, I think I can get away with just honing and putting new bearings in. Going to take the head to another guy I was recommended to yesterday who does alot of work for the miata and porsche guys here. So far until I get the head checked out I am happy specially with the bottom end, I dont think I will get charged an arm and leg for the head.

Bringing up an old thread. Does anybody know of an updated part number for the Kia lifters? I called my local dealer and have them the 247-12-101 number and they couldn't find anything based off of that.
