Cracked a header in a crash last year, and it's leaking big time now.

What's the wisdom? Do I need to get a vintage part because it will flow better? Or can I just order a new one from Mazda?

Juan:
I don't know if the new ones from MS are any better, but they sure can't be much worse. As you know, finding a free(er) flowing 1.6 exhaust manifold is a big deal. Frankly if the one you have is a keeper, I'd try hard to weld it up. Fact is that a good percentage of old 1.6 headers are already cracked in the area where the four tubes gather.

I hadn't even thought about welding it up. Does that work? Is it just a simple matter of tacking up the crack? Or is it a tricky operation?

It really shouldn't be too bad. If the crack is close to an area where the header bolts to the engine, take your time and don't allow for too much heat buildup. Doing this will avoid warping the mounting surface.

I did not think we were allowed to weld on the header? I have one which is leaking inbetween where the 4 tubes come together. I had heard it leaking and then found out it had a hole when I Seafoamed the engine as the white smoke cam out from there. I might try welding it up now.

What do you mean "Seafoamed the engine?"

Seafoam is an additive for cleaning crud out of your motor, or using your exhaust as a DIY bug fogger...depending on what you need that day.
