I can't argue with the 1.6/2300 except it reduces my incentive to join Jenny Craig. I am suprised to see changes across all model years thru 2005. It seems at some point we would know the combination(s) which best achieve parity and that part of the specifications could remain unchanged for at least a few years. Or did we just need another hot topic to debate for the off-season? :o

Several questions....for the 94 to 95 1.8L that will be choked down to 43 mm from its current 45mm......what was the plate size before 45mm? I recall removing one from my car (I think) but can't remember the size. My car is in another state right now otherwise I'd just look.

Also, if my old plate is not anodized like the SCCA ones are.....is it legal so long as it measures to the specification?

Thanks, Jay

I loaned a non annodized one to Cliff Blanchard for the Nasa Nationals and after being scrutinized was marked and allowed to continue. I think its a tight call as to what the tech inspector will do, maybe Collins will give us a more definitive answer.

It went from a 45, to a 47, and now back to a 45 so your old plate is still good. SCCA didn't make the only plates. I think Maz Motorsports made their own too.

If you have the anodized plate, for the most part I can examine it without removing it from the car. If you have an aluminum plate it needs to be removed from the car for inspection. Post race plan on removing it regardless of style.

Hey Mike, I need a Meathead answer.
What is the thought process behind allowing sleeved blocks in the past, and for next year through the runoffs, but not after that? I'm in the process of sleeving a trashed cylinder on an older engine, but now it won't be legal in less than a year. Am I missing something?

Jerry, don't sleeve it. Take it .010 over. Going to one size over is the proper factory procedure and we now have changed the rules to allow this. The cost to go .010 over is SUBSTANTIALLY less than sleeving the block. Unfortunately we have found that some folks have taken advantage of the sleeve rule and were using it for a potential advantage.

As a former SMACian, Back in the old days we where governed by Showroom Stock rules, which did not allow for any overbore. The SMAC requested permission for 0.010" over bore. The higher-ups said no frickin way. So we allowed a sleeve at stock dimension.

Fast forward to 2011 and people are using sleeves to create horsepower. So to stop the great expense of the sleeving, and curtail the arms race, a 0.010" overbore was allowed. And the sleeving was disallowed. To make some people happy, the sleeves are allowed up untill the Runoffs.

The last time I checked, the oversize pistons and rings are EXACTLY the same price as the standard size ones. And most engine builders can take a typical 0.006" worn block to 0.010" over bore with an agressive hone for no additional charge. There should be no need to get the boring bar out of the box.

But then guys like me get hosed because I had one cylinder done in August as I damaged #4. Though if I was going to do Runoffs or NASA I'd do an engine program with support from a known quantity. Though that's a couple of years away for me, as long as it's running strong I'll be giving the esteemed Will Power gesture to the rule. I'm not doing it as a perf advantage so I have no problem with it. If they want to bounce what's likely to be a backmarker while I learn and move up to mid pack, beat my guest. When/if I do make it to the pointy end the program will change and I won't have the need trim every nickel. My sleeve was $200, all in with a hone in all four holes. To go to +0.01 is $100 for the machining (25 a hole) then using Mazda pistons, rings and bearings, it turns into $600 or so range. Using ITM or other OEM dimension parts brings it closer to having a sleeve.

'Round these here parts, $200 is less than $600. Perhaps allowing a single cylinder or two would have been a more equitable measure. I'll stand by for the "write the letter" comments....
