Trailer springs question

Though not really "Miata" safety, but here are some pictures of the trailer springs on my open trailer.

First is what the spring clips should look like:

Anyone have any thoughts on whether this is a good thing or bad thing? I always thought keeping the clips on the springs was a good idea.

Neither. I have gone decades without any clips on leaf springs.

The clips being broken is not a problem. BUT, often the clips break because the spring is broken and is trying to twist. Check the center of the spring carefully for cracks.

Those springs are often available at places like Farm and Fleet or Tractor Supply for pretty cheap. If you need to replace the springs, change all the hardware also.
