Jim

Thrilled that you like that line - in fact I recommend you keep on using it.

And you keep using yours, in the dirt that is :) :noidea: When you or Alex( or anyone else) passes me from the entrance of one, to the exit of seven, I will change to their line.. So far I'm still waiting. :)

We are racing, not running time trials or segment times. There is far more to racing than segment times, lines, corner entry and lap times. T1 is the WORST place to push your car , lap after lap, long sustained loads on tires, means less tires at the end when you REALLY need them. Fortunately for me, I did not need to do that, Danny had little choice. As long I as I was in contact with Cliff at 7, it really didn't matter what happened from 1-7. So to use up tires in one to stay on his bumper would be silly. When I took the lead, I pushed everywhere trying to break away, but not until.

All ball busting aside, when driven 10/10 you may lose a little from 1-3 with distance with my line, but the transition to three is much easier the way I do it, corner exit is better and it makes the next corner easier for "me" to drive and not make mistakes.. SM is about your fastest 18 laps, not your fastest lap, not your fastest segment and not your fastest corner. Everyone is different, but taking three the way I do, eliminates mistakes for "me" and my goal is to do all in my power to win, consistency wins. This helps "me" be consistent. I would prefer to lose .1 in that segment every lap, than risk an off or mistake that costs me a second plus when I can't afford it and no time to make it up. I drill it into all my friends and customers, any that will listen, SM is about your fastest 18 laps. Same goes for guys who race every corner etc, IMO, that is pretty stupid.. Do what you can to increase your odds of winning, thin the herd, race as few as possible at the end. If that means you stay second or third when you can lead, stay second or third and get away from third, fourth and the rest.

OK, that' s my 2 minute ball busting and race strategy session.. I am leaving for vacation, so I will try and check in on the road. Have a good week guys

I also have noticed that phenomenon, others in the same race did not show that same consistency. Fun running Fast race lap, more fun winning with or without the fast race lap.

I knew that the spare motor was not going to be a front runner

Danny - great video! Only thing it doesn't show is a lack of horsepower in your spare motor!

LOL...thanks for keeping me honest. My motor was VERY FAST, but my video doesn't show me pulling the 99's. Sometimes I got off the corner, and sometimes they did. That would be torque.

Hallett is our home track and our race set-up was perfect. Set my fast lap on 25th lap. Remember that we had to rebuild the left rear corner on Saturday night, so Sunday qualifying wasn't quite right, but we nailed it for the race. Our team holds the track record and we know the set-up. Hallett is a short, technical, hilly monster fun fest and I think the different cars were well matched.

The only 99 that was even close to being down on power was Matt Reynolds, IMHO. Would enjoy seeing your video, too.

Now, with that said...note that Danny set the overall fastest lap in that Atlanta race. Go Rossini back-up motors!

Hi all,

So this race at Road Atlanta was my first race in a Spec Miata. I enjoyed every bit of the weekend and look forward to getting back out there and getting quicker. Anyway, most of you heard about the incident in turn 10 near the end. I was in the blue car, right behind the car that spun. I knew that Drago and Brown were approaching us quickly so I did what I could to avoid the spinning car and stay out of the way of the leaders. Luckily everyone made it through clean and the race up front continued. I'll try to get the video up soon from my car so you all can see what happened. It gives a very good view of everything, especially Brown flying through the air beside me. Until then, here's a screenshot.

So here's my video of the full national race. Some really great racing by Drago, Brown, Sandlin and Topping. The video should also be a good primer on how to drive Road Atlanta.

When I blew my great Rossini motor in qualifying, I knew that the spare motor was not going to be a front runner, but instead of heading home I decided to go ahead and do the engine swap, stay for the race and give it my best shot.

I knew I didn’t have any chance at winning, but I thought that if I could outdrive them in the infield from T1 to T7, possibly catch a sniff in the draft from T7 to T10A, make up some ground in the T10A braking zone, then who knows, maybe, just maybe I would be there at the end and possibly have a chance if someone made an error.

I knew that trying to accomplish this without killing the tires was going to be a tall order. Driving the snot out of the car and trying to get more than the tires are capable of giving works great for a while and then the tires start to go away.

I hung on for the first 20 minutes but in the end I couldn’t hang with them, and fell back a few seconds. Topping’s gearbox quit allowing me a brief sniff of 3rd place, but then Sandlin motored passed me like I was standing still. (24:35). Sandlin's drive from way back after avoiding Topping on lap 1 is an impressive drive to say the least.

Despite finishing 4th I still feel it was one of my best races ever and it taught me a lot about how to drive an underpowered car and still try and preserve the tires. Just sorry that I was not able to mix it up with Drago Brown and Sandlin up front. They had one hell of a race and just wish I could have had some fun making it even harder for them.

Brown and Drago’s evasive maneuver happen around the 30 minute mark in T10A as they come up on two lappers who go side by side and spin in front of them......

Danny, Jim any other expert: What is the cause of the gap formed when Danny goes from 3rd to 4th grear? He absolutley gets dopped out of turn 7 eveytime he shifted.

May be more than one thing may be at play here. One for sure is motor two for Danny wasn't as good as motor one.

Not an expert, but you could see it in the second half of the Atlanta race video he posted (see 17:20). Based on the change in the way the car got off that corner in the first half, compared to the second half, it looks like the motor is suffering from heat. His temp only shows 210, but not sure if that reading is correct. He runs most of the race in the draft and pings the rev limiter a few times....maybe the thing got hot and laid down?

The top end looks fine, just that torque in 3rd to 4th off turn 7 (before the straight).

Also, he was losing coolant in qualifying...
