Does anyone have direct experience with using the Hawk DTC compounds? I'm specifically looking for feedback on how the newer compounds compare to the older 9012 (Blue) compound. How was pad wear (faster/slower) compared to the Blues? How was modulation compared to the Blues? Any brake rotor temp notes comparing the two? Did you use a DTC60/60 combination or a DTC60/30 combo and how did that affect your trail braking technique? I'm thinking about giving the new compound a try in the spring but can't seem to find much feedback about them...

(Please withhold any Carbotech comments)

I have raced on both. Love them both. I'm not the best guy to comment as I adapt to the pad fairly quickly so I like just about all the player's entries in the market.

DTC60 is my fav with the MX5, won the championship on them.

Blue for the SM, won 3 ARRCs on them.

I had a rather large post on this subject at the old site. TESTING, even taking a year off from trying to perform to test products, will pay dividends in your program for years to come. Knowing for myself what I like has been the biggest avenue to improvement in my personal racing.

On the Mustang team, im asked to decide such things, I only do that after the drivers try each and we compare data and feel.

I used the DTC60 on the stock car. Tons of bite and modulated well even at high temps. We had to keep the stock drums on the rear. Easily lasted a season on a 3500 lb car.

Sorry, no experience with Hawk, but I dropped the pads you don't want comments about. Now use a PFC compound that I like a lot.

I was asked about the Mustang and SM5s for me personally. I use combinations of Carbotechs these days. Through our Mustang testing we found that while each of us liked a different pedal feel we all found the combo we liked within the Carbotech pad range. On the MX5s, i like more pedal feel as the car has larger brakes vs weight than a SM. There is a gap in the pad feel that I corrected, for my feel, with the Carbos.

Makes it easy and I like buying from Mazda friendly folks WHO ACTUALLY ANSWER ALL MY DUMB QUESTIONS. lol

In the aftermarket pro world of brakes most companies require you use their pad and caliper combo. We specifically use Stoptech brake packages because they let us choose the pad. Danny at Carbo mixed up the pads for us and once we found that feel, brake issues went away.

Ok, someone at Carbo send me a check for this unsolicited endorsement LOL.

Again, buy them all and test, if you have to run a different pad company front to rear, that is fine.

I've used the Hawk "Blues" and the DTC line in a 60/30 combo. For myself I found the DTC's to have slightly less bite in the beginning but better modulation than the "Blues". I had been using the Carbotech's before that but since my home track is Sebring their life span was short. The DTC's have doubled my pad life.

My Spec Miata came with Blues and Blacks and then I switched to the DTC-60 front and DTC-30 rear. George is correct that the initial bite is less with the DTC, but modulation and wear are much better. I also seem to get better rotor life using the DTC pads and they are easy to bed.

I ran a 60/60 combo for a day and I actually felt that it was a pretty good match on the car. Less initial bite then the blues, but still enough to easily lock the left front.. maybe a bit to much for me. I generally liked less initial bite, just preference though. Sorry I can't be of more help, that was the last time I was in the car!

I really like the 60s, I find the blues too "binary" for me (on or off). The modulation with the DTC is superior. Great initial bite and I can really feel the tire grip. I'm comparing this to the thing you told me not to mention.

one weird thing for me is that i generally went through front pads at 2-3x the rate as rears, but the DTC I actually ran out of rears early?? This was on a new set of calipers though, it's very likely my old junk was frozen.

I really like the 60s, I find the blues too "analog" for me (on or off).

I can adjust to modulation and initial bite characteristics of all the pads I've tried, but I've ended up with Carbos because they seem to work better on the NW tracks that are dominated by very long straights. My theory is you need to keep pads in thier sweet spot temp range and if for some reason (cool conditions or bypassed chicanes or just don't use the brakes much :) ) you are not in that range, the pads will not work efficiently and just grind down your rotors. Same goes for overheating pads as the result of short straights and lots of hard braking, where you get reduced efficiency due to gassing (can be felt as small pulses in the pedal).

Bringing this thread back from the dead. I wore out my front set of Hawk Blue's and replaced them with DTC-60 pads. The rear blue pads still have a decent amount of life left. Has anybody ran this combo? Good, bad, indifferent? I would like to run the blues until they are done but the next event for me is a double weekend and I would hate to throw away that money because the brakes aren't feeling right. Any input is appreciated.

I've done the DTC-60's on the front with the Blue rears. The rear will grab a tad more, but it's comfortable.

Try it, if YOU like it wonderful. No matter what any of the so called experts tell you, any of the combos will work, it is 100% your preference.

A little late to the party, but I've been running DTC60 front and Blues rear for a while.  Very pleased with the combo.  I've always preferred Hawks to the other guys on the SM - seems to fit my style better.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you like them. I had something come up and can't make the double weekend so I will get to try them out on a regular HPDE weekend which takes the stress away from trying something new.
