Sucked an intake valve

All was well until Sunday when I down shifted to 2nd for turn 11 at Thunderhill and had no power after and what sounded like horrible flatulence after Casa Ramos. Come to find out had sucked an intake valve (over-revved and hit it with a piston?) in cylinder #1. No hole in piston though dinged up. Spark plug was a little hard to get out. No valve to be found (will search the exhaust manifold or back further). Was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a good used engine source or good long block.

There is always stuff on craigslist but it's often hit or miss. I got lucky with mine but I helped the guy pull it from a car he was parting so got to start it and hear it before buying and saw the odometer (91k).

There is also Attarco for JDM motors. They are in Richmond and Sac.

Hmm... I understood they were the same bottom end and head. hence isn't the equivalent/same engine sitting under the hood of my car?

There might be other differences, but I know they have different profiled cams.

The NB had different cams. I think the NAs are the same except for the emissions system. That coming from a brief interweb search returning results from people who may not know what they're talking about.

According to a couple of sources, including Larry Edsall's wonderful book Miata 20 Years and the hit and miss Wikipedia, the B6ZE was the engine in all NA 1.6L worldwide. The HP differences are 116 hp/US version, 120 hp/UK, Japan and Australia and 110 hp in the European versions. The added hp could be from an emissions/computer tweek. The domestic Japanese version and the US version both had 9.4:1 static compression ratio.

Edsall's book goes into great detail about the history of the Miata from the California design studio to the 2010 model. All Miata/MX-5s come from Mazda Hiroshima hence they all need to be "imported directly from Japan".

Most likely cause is the 2 piece known to fail intake valve had enough and it's head poped off

If the engine is over reved the valve can over extend and hit the top of the piston. That deforms the shape and/or break the valve and can cause the valve train to "inhale" the valve. That one didn't look too bad comnpared to what can happen in the cylinder, to the piston and to the head and valve train. In any case, any type of this type of failure, in any engine is not a good thing.
