Two harness-related questions:

1) After reading many positive comments about Safecraft belts here, I did a Google search and came up with a web site that seems to have a decent (lower) price for their belts:

https://sector111.co...ign_harness.cfm

However, I wonder if they are different than the model recommended for Spec Miatas.

Your thoughts?

2) Can I hear pros and cons for 5 vs. 6 point harnesses? I really haven't used anything besides 6 point harnesses in a long while (in my formula cars). I'm not sure if 6 points are better/worse in a more upright seating position. I'm also not clear how they would be routed/mounted in a Spec Miata. My seat will be a Sparco Pro2000, which does not appear to have any holes for sub belts.

Thank you. Oh, and Merry Christmas, y'all. :-).

I'd make sure they're not selling those belts for less because the date sticker on them is old.

I personally think 6-point harnesses are much more comfortable. Not as much of a problem with that seat but with many that have 3 holes, one for a 5 pt and 2 for a 6 pt, it's easy to drop the sub down the hole using a 5 pt. That makes for some awkward moments during enduro driver changes although some surgical tubing or a small bungee cord can fix it. A 6 pt is safer for a couple reasons. You still have a sub belt if one breaks or tears out. Also the pulling direction is better for sideways impacts. A 5 pt can be useful for drivers of different sizes. You can leave it long enough for the biggest driver and twist it a few times to make it shorter (and much less comfortable) for the smaller drivers.

That seat does have a sub hole. The cushions hide it from most pictures but you can see it from bottom views.

SafeCraft has discontinued their 5 point belts. My assumption, and it is only an assumption, is cost containment. The manufacturer has to have each style of belt certified individually. So a 5 point belt is certified seperately from the 6 point version. Last I heard at a cost of $5000 per. Takes a lot of belts to recoupe that outlay.

I just recieved an rder of 2013 dated Safecraft belts last week. They are in stock and ready to ship.

Thanks for the info. Dave. What's the cost of the 2013 Safe Craft belt package?

Dave,

Tried to PM you but could not.

Can you send me an email or PM with your Safecraft belt price? Also, I'm interested in how they are typically mounted in a Spec Miata. Does the package come with everything needed? If not, what hardware is needed? Bolts, nuts and washers for the lap and sub belts (and, of course, extra structure support under the floor pan)?

Thank you.

Dave, If you are coming to Sebring, maybe you can bring a couple?

I used the stock mounting points for both the lap and sub belts. I sit on my sub belts like a climbing harness. I find it helps keep me more secure in my seat, especially while autocrossing my car.

Also, what are the redeeming qualities of a latch and link belt?  I've never liked them, but they are made for a reason.

Another vote for the Schroth enduro belts. They cinch down on the first pull EVERY TIME with very little effort. They feel like they are on ball bearings. It's helpful for safety to ensure that your belts are always tight.

The dirt track guys are required to use them. I understand the camlock belts can foul in the dirt.
