Okay, so my dutifull wife/crew chief is a NASCAR junkie. Last night we watched the two 150 mile races and what I learned was that everybody gets in the 500 mile race based on thieir finishing position and or a bewildering range of pre-existing conditions that appear to grant anyone with a major sponsor a starting position in the 43 car field. The idea that a race that has to be the most boring of the entire NASCAR season gets billed as the "best", "biggest" and "most important" is unfathonable. The only thing that makes NASCAR Daytona races bearable is the prospect of the "big one" - and that's a pretty sad commentary.

P.S. The one positive was that Darrel Waltrup did not shreek out his "Boggity-boogity, let's go racin boys" chant at the green flag. He did however utter some of the dumbest comments this side of John Madden.

While I agree with most of the comments above, the spectacle of being there for the event is kind of fun.  Also during normal years with drafting--- the cars on the banking end up looking like planes going around a arena. Being a employee of Roush and a fan---I hope we win in a big way....  Biffle may have the car...

Jeff Gordon was > 4/100 sec. slower than Dani - was he cheating too? The conspiracists crack me up - never mind getting 42 other drivers to play along - how do you persuade all the major corporate sponsors, kicking in millions of dollars, to agree that their team should sandbag. PS: major sponsors are tough to get these days.

 

Happy Harvick has been dominant all month - he's gonna be tough to beat.

 

My favorite races are always the ones that stay green.

 

Michael, agreed. TV doesn't do any motor race justice. Been to Daytona several times, waited for the Troopers to pass by, then stood by the fence until chased away by said Troopers. Nothing quite like feeling 43 cars going 200 mph about 6 feet in front of you.

 

Rick, tried and true NASCAR viewing technique - DVR race while doing something productive - later watch first 20 laps and last 20 laps. Works for SuperBowl too!

 

My favorite two Daytona races  - the two Central Florida Region ECRs I entered, 2008 and 2009. I gotta get back down there.

Like Darrell Waltrip said, If danica would start in the middle of the pack the story would be buried, Now she is on the pole it will be the headline story on many media outlets! Nascar needs all the help they can get to attract fans,they are bleeding a slow death. If you like it or not the only reason she has a cup ride is because of the $ she brings to the table period! Did nascar supply her team with a special plate, we will never know! Bring her to scca spec miata racing and put her against Drago,Denny, Buras and the boys and lets see how good she really is!

Look, in pro racing you need money to play, that's for sure.

 

If you want to put her skill set in a similar playing field to ours.....she raced formula fords over in England.  I've watched some of that racing, and those kids are super agressive, and are racing three races a day.

 

Ohh, by the way she placed second in the formula ford festival over there.....she's the highest placing American ever I believe.

 

Guys, she can drive.  Look at how JPM is doing in NASCAR.  The dude has won the Indy 500, won at Monaco, and has struggled in NASCAR.  I have no doubt that if she sticks around in NASCAR long enough to figure things out, she'll be a top 15 driver....which is saying a lot.

I didn't know that old DW didn't say the BBB thing, since I always mute the start, so that I will never have to hear that again. 

 

To the following,   "If you like it or not the only reason she has a cup ride is because of the $ she brings to the table period!"    well Duh!! That counts for about 90% of the field.  You also don't see a lot of really ugly drivers in NASCAR, unlike SM.  ;-).  Ugly doesn't please the sponsors.

True she finished 10th in points.  But that is deceiving.  There were only 12 drivers that ran all the races.  That means out of 12 full time drivers, she finished 10th.

AND... she did that with the best equipment out there.  Not real impressive to me.

 

All anyone has to do is listen to her b*tch and whine over the radio.  She asks her crew some of the dumbest questions. 

 

I watched qualifying on Fox last Sunday.  I found it very interesting when they super-imposed Danica's run with Gordon and Stewart, and for that matter many more, everyone would be ahead of Danica and pulling through Nascar #1 and #2.  Then a little bit down the backstretch, Danica's car would take off and pull ahead.  All motor there.  If ANY ONE thinks that Nascar would not hand her team a 'special' restrictor plate, then they don't know Nascar. 

 

Having spoken with Dick Trickle on several occasions, (leave it alone), he has shared many stories from Nascar and short tracks around the country with me.  Things like this happen often.

 

I laugh everytime D. Waltrip talks about her learning curve and how well she's doing.  She is racing at the top level of stock car racing and she is 'learning'?  Think of how many talented drivers are out there that could probably hop in a top ride and do very well.  But, because they were born with a penis, they will never get the chance.

 

Danica fits right in with Nascar as it has become a joke.

Tony Stewart is the only former open-wheel driver in the last couple decades that I can think of that has had success in NASCAR. What have Hornish, Montoya, Speed, Almendinger, John Andretti, Robby Gordon ever done to set NASCAR on fire? (I'm sure I'm missing some others) There's a huge learning curve. How come no one EVER gives these guys any shiz, and say they don't belong in NASCAR.

 

I believe a lot of people don't like Danica because they don't like her attitude. Name a professional racer that doesn't have an ego, that isn't competitive, that doesn't drive aggressively?

 

Some people can deny it all they want, but I truly believe that they will never accept a female in a traditionally male sport.

Its not that she is a woman. Joanna Long can wheel a car better but she doesn't have the best equipment in the business like dp. Nascar has pushed danica to the forefront to a point where just about every article or tv show about nascar. has to bring her name up. It gets sickening after a while! I could care if a guy or gal is driving. To get respect you have to earn respect. She has earned nothing to this point to deserve this much hoopla. Nascar should focus on all their drivers and promote them equally ! No matter if they a penis or not. Whatever happened to Jimmy SMUT Means?
