WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Spec Miata 1. #10118 (SCCA Staff) Review the Use of Marked Tires SCCA requests input from the Spec Miata community regarding the possibility of starting races on marked tires that have been previously used in a qualifying session. SCCA has received input regarding some concern over the perception that a driver needs to "sticker up" for each qualifying and race session, thus increasing costs. Please submit a letter with your responses through the CRB letter system at crbscca.com. Your input is appreciated.

I like it but would like to see it include tires used previously in either a practice or qualifying session.  The question is, what is the penalty for racing on stickers if someone is forced to do it? Loss of qualifying time?  Of course someone could throw on a set late in a session and do a lap and that would count as "previously used"?

Rains excluded.

Could/should we restrict it to one set per weekend?  1 set for qual/race, qual/race in a double?

Allow one new change for flat spot if you can show the flat spot to tech?

3 position penalty in that day's race if you're on new stickers when you shouldn't be?

I think they used to do this in SRF. Seems like I remember a tech guy marking tires in grid? It's been a while, so I could be wrong. If they did do it in SRF, are they still doing it? If they are not, how come?

This proposal penalizes everyone who isn't going through 8 or 12 sticker tires per weekend.

It takes away the opportunity to qualify on 2  (or 4)  stickers, let them cure for at least a week, so you can get "as many as possible" competitive heat cycles, per the Hoosier guidelines.

It takes away saving your best tires for the race.

Formula Mazda ( I think) cars do this, they must have one qualifying session only.

A qualifying race further forces more tire expense, and doesn't allow saving your tires - hope you don't flat spot in the qualifying race when someone dive bombs you for 17th place on the last lap.

If people are using 4 stickers for qualifying and 4 stickers for races - let them keep doing it, AND LET ME USE THE TIRES I WANT TO.

....or we could go back to a tire with less grip that puts more emphasis on the driver's ability, and a tire that just gets better with more heat cycles.

Pretty sure that's what SRF ended up doing.

I once heard a rumor that next year we would possibly be on a harder compound Hoosier maybe what is being run in grand am currently? Been while since I heard that and haven't heard anything since...

I like the idea myself

Toyo RA1s only got better with each run because many of us started them at suboptimal tread depths.  Start at 1/32 and they were fast from the beginning, for about 4 runs.

Biggest problem with this worn out argument of if so and so has stickers for every session there for I must have them, its communist at its core...

Thsi is the land of the free and home of the brave, and I say this a National/Majors racer with a far more stringent budget then most of the guys who are finishing in front of me...  2012 I purchased 2 NEW sets of SM6 tires all year, and One set of H20...  My H20's still have only2 sessions on them.

I dont say this to cry the blues, but on that Tiny Tire Budget I won 4 NEW hoosier SM6 tires last year between SCCA and NASA, ran 13 weekends, and ran a 6th best single lap time at the ARRC.  I look back at 2012 and I think I ran a pretty damn good season last year with the tire budget I had for the amount of events that I attended.

So Far in 2013 I have purchased 8 NEW SM6 tires, got to 9th on Sunday at COTA on 12 cycle tires, didnt do well at the ATL major but it had nothign to do with tires and everythign to do with my driving.  I ran the fast race lap of a 1.5 hour enduro 1 hour into the race which turned out to be a 1.5 hour sprint race, that was on 15 cycle tires...

We all have to be responsible for ourselves and our own budget, Those that have the means to buy a new set of stickers for every session, have most likely been blessed through their hard work, why should we that dont have that budget get the right to mandate what they can or cannot do with their abundance?

This same tired old argument has been used in reference to hiring a COACH, buying a PRO MOTOR, RACE PREPPED TRANS, EVEN THE NEED FOR A DATA SYSTEM...

We all race a Spec Car, have Spec tires, why not spec race with what you qualify with.  It's not that hard, we do it at every WKA National race and it works great and keeps the cost down and competition more level.

I would take that penalty at any race that I wanted to win :) There would need to be a penalty, but probably more substantial

I sure don't miss the extra step of shaving.  The track support of the Hoosier spec tire has been very convenient.

The idea of a harder compound for both the SM6 and H2O sounds good to me.

The marked tire thing sounds difficult to manage.  We can't get people to look for a restrictor plate.

I suggest that comments made here do not count for anything when it comes to any decision for SM tires.  If you have any comments, please post them to the crbscca.com comment page.  SCCA is reviewing the future of the SM spec tire and this is just part of the decision process.

thanks,

wheel

3 position penalty off the FINISH of that day's race.  That's why I didn't say start in the rear.  On some tracks starting on the rear with new tires would still be a better option.

Pat
How did they do it there? you might submit it.

Also, this is for member input, so as Wheel said, send in a letter for or against and opinions.

I have no issue qualifying and racing on same tires, that is what I do 99% of the time now. I qualify on stickers, rarely run more than 4-5 laps in qualifying then race on those tires. I don't "like" racing on stickers, I would rather race on a known good set of tires. after a few laps, I can't tell much between stickers and one session tires.

As far as three position penalty kind of severe IMO.. If someone wants to mark a set of tires, qualify on them and completely flat spot four tires in order to run stickers, they definitely want it more than I do. I am not ruining a good set of tires, just for a chance to switch to stickers. However if I do have an instance where I flat spot a tire or two, I still want to be able to have a chance at a win. If the penalty is no way I can win, really not much sense in going out.

We went through the marked tire exercise for the first time in WC this weekend.  I like the idea for SM and will submit a letter.  Might be worth noting that we were allowed to rotate tires to any position and add one unmarked tire between races.  This helps in the case of a flat tire, broken wheel, flat spot...whatever.

Could really get interesting if only one set of tires were allowed for the whole weekend  :duck:
