You can sleep in your car, but you can't race your house.

I'm at infineon testing before tomorrow's race. I over rev'ed the engine, 3-2 instead of 3-4. Car seemed ok after, but not sure. Oil pressure on track 48, 22 idling. Engine is a 1.6L.

But when I restarted it, there was a big racket. Sounded maybe more tinny than something deeper in the engine. I thought maybe an exhaust or header issue. When I went to turn the engine off, it kept running. Not well, but wouldn't die. Flipping the electrical cutoff did kill it. I restarted, no noise, and engine shuts off normally. Noise came back, and again engine would not shut off.

Unfortunately I have not been able to look for that noise. At present, it's not doing that. Ideas? I'm afraid car might be broken for the weekend. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
-Juan

Juan:

This may be way off, but something to think about?

Check your timing belt......last year I stalled the car in the paddock, and somehow jumped the timing belt. Made a heck of a racket and caused all sorts of problems.

I've done the 3-2 oops......twice......in the span of five seconds or less. That didn't cause the noise you are hearing, but I know nothing about mechanical things.

I guess file this in the category of "well at least it's easy enough to check" rather than probable solution.

Hey Juan,
A little Birdy (engine builder) told me.

"Sounds bad like rod bearing or something"

Doesn't really help but...
See you tomorrow or tonight if they let me in.

Hey Johnny, Not a rod bearing.

OK, problem found and unrelated to overrev. It's an interesting one. Any guesses? I wonder if Tom and Ray would figure it out.

Im really disappointed in you guys. Obviously it would be the canooter valve. It couldn't be the flux capacitor, since only 99's have those.
How do I fit this Ls7 into my mia.... nevermind

This is a riot! It was the starter motor failing to disengage. The racket was the starter gear. When I killed the ignition, the starter kept running because the gear remained engaged, and the power for the starter is switched my the deployment of the gear, not the key.

The starter had been going bad for a long time, occasionally failing to turn over for multiple times. This was it's ultimate failure mode.

New starter fixed all.

RE over rev: the engine stayed in one piece all weekend. I turned a few fast laps, but not consistently.
