I would like to add a seat and belts to the passenger side my 1990 SSM car. The seat and belts that I am looking for is something should  fit without mods and can be used to accommodate instructors and passengers of different sizes. Also what other hardware will I need to mount them?  Were is the best place to get these items.

Thanks Tom

1990 SSM Miata.

Personally I wouldn't ride with you unless my safety equipment is at least as good as yours, in other words duplicate what you're using on the driver's side.

Duplicate what you have on the driver side to protect the passenger, Seat, Harness, Window Net, roll bar padding, Cage protruding in the door.

This used to be the mantra, but I have HANS specific belts.  They will not work (properly) without a HANS.  Not all passengers will have a HANS.  So get 3" non-HANS belts for passengers and hope they work well enough should a passenger want to use a HANS device?

Honestly, I would not let anyone ride next to me unless they have a HANS as well,  It saved my life once, and I hate for a passenger getting injured for any reason knowing I did not take every pre-caution there is.  But this is just me.

I have 3" belts on my passenger side following that same logic that some passengers will not have an HANS. I have spent plenty of time in the right seat with my HANS (current Sport 2 model) and it works fine.

Bill, if anyone decided they wanted to ride with you I would immediately call the suicide hotline. Clearly they are trying to kill themselves. :-)

Tom:

I would go with 3" shoulder belts for the passenger side.....heck it's what I have on my driver's side anyway.  I don't like the 2".

As for how to mount the seat.....mounting safely is important but luckily position isn't critical since the passenger isn't driving.

I recommend using some flat steel as a base.....and mount these to the stock mounting positions (those prethreaded holes on the front cross piece and the two rear humps.  Throw a cross member in between.  The two front to back flat steel pieces will be on a angle like a ski jump.

Then use side mount brackets to mount a seat to the flat steel base.

I would make that passenger side seat easy to get in and out......the reason being I would be taking it out to race (imagine crawling over it to get out if you had to!)

The kirkey aluminum seats are easier to get in and out than fiberglass seats, though instructors will want something similar to what you're sitting in (and I don't blame them).  If you want to put a fiberglass seat in....look for one that's "expired".  They are SCCA legal now w/o a back brace.  May help you save a few bucks.

Good luck!

Something to consider in the SM/SSM:

Adding a halo seat will create some risk for the passenger, because the small corner window can not be legally removed on the passenger side.  God forbids right side door can't open during a crash, and your passenger is on the heavier side (not so difficult), he will have a problem with egress.
