im new to this whole miata thing; i have just bought a 96 mx-5 and im contemplating on how to pull some extra power out of it. im looking for 150-200hp, nothing crazy. i have been looking at many different setups such as turbo, supercharge, itb, or start modifying the engine/head. it has 140k miles and i dont want to put a lot of extra strain on the engine if i dont have to (boost). are there any ideas on how to make some safe and reliable power to have some fun with??

This may not be the best forum to search for that...mostly because the majority of us are stuck in our spec miata bubble (myself included).

miata.net might be good.

also club roadster, and I think there is a turbo miata forum.

in terms of suppliers on the spec miata side of things that have probably see their share of wild miata motors, I know planet miata has seen some turbo kits and superchargers go through their doors, and they used to run a full blown ita miata build with mega squirt ecu and such.  flatout used to run a full blown ita miata as well, and I know they have a customer with a mazda speed miata with a factory turbo on it.

if you wanted cheap power shoe horned into a miata though...wheel has it right.  small block chevy or ford.  been done plenty of times.

good luck!

Check Miata.net and MiataTurbo.net.

This section at Miata Turbo is interesting.

Especially this thread from emilio at 949:

Also, check out Advanced Autosports since they are near you in WI.

Go to SCCA.com and find the GCR tab...find the section labeled SM and read for a couple hours. This is what most here did!

Ron's idea is complete, but not what you're after.  Spec Miata is a class for amateur road racing cars used by several sanctioning bodies, most notably the Sports Car Club of America.  It's designed to force all the cars to be substantially equal and relatively low in cost.  To that end, most of the drive train is dead stock, and the rules won't LET us do any of the mods you're looking for.

I have one of the Fast Forward coldside SC units in my 99 street miata.  I love the instant response, no delay, no lag.  I am running a consertive tune with an undersized pully and probably pushing 210+ hp at the rear wheels.  It is extremely well designed, great support from Tom, the designer, and literally plug and play.  One other plug and play option would be one of the Flyin Miata Turbo kits, which was my second choice.  PM me if you need more FFS info.
