Looking at the manual, it looks like I can separate the torsen and carrier from the diff casing by just removing the 10 bolts.  Is there anything I can look at to determine that the unit is sound?  Is there anything I can do to clean the torsen, or is it just a waste of time?  If I take the time to open it up, should I be doing anything else?

Be careful...this may be a gray question area and trade secret :)

Short answer is no...but If you want to explore, it's not hard. Once the carrier is off, you can clean all inside. But don't remove any bolts...unless you want to pay to have it put back together!

I don't have much help to offer as I have never rebuilt a diff but I always thought this thread was useful to those playing around inside a Mazda rear end: http://www.rx7club.c...writeup-897359/

You really should not need to clean it.

You can separate the Torsen from the ring gear but taking the Torsen apart is easy it's the putting back together that is the problem. I pulled a bad one apart to explore it, I could not get it back together, I am decent mechanical and could not do it.

Also they do not sell replacement parts so there is no need to.

If it's not making noise or slipping I would leave it be. Plus the art of assembling the ring and pinion takes skills and tools.

How would a Torsen slip?

I have no intention of disassembly beyond the carrier/diff and the casing.  It came from an old donor and I want to make sure it looks sound before I clean up the casing, replace the seals and put it in a race car.  I drove it for a total of 5 miles, all at low speed, so I don't have much history.  Also, the bushings in the casing show as replacement items in the manual.  Darn things are 60 bucks apiece and it looks like you need an elephant press to install.  Are they really wear items?

The carrier bushings are pretty tough items. Just my experience...no guarantee it's correct...have never replaced or seen these replaced nor have I ever seen one damaged or off center.
