Am seeing 260F oil in traffic, 214F water.  Is this normal?  Ambient when I see this its reasonably cool, from high 60s to high 70s.

Thoughts?

It's typical on a SM. Don't be surprised if you're seeing 280 when it warms up outside.

I run an oil cooler on my ITA car....

Hmmm...this is interesting to me. Though i have never kept close tabs pretty sure our car is consistently around 240F, regardless of outside temp on a normal run. But can someone who has payed close attention share any info of a rise in temps shortly before any type of bearing failure? I would think the possible increased friction might show up in oil temps?

Can provide some recent data from the Thunder Hill Majors race.  Steve Powers (145) Started 17th finished 5th ( ran 4th fastest race lap).

Our AIM temp data for the race was:

Under Hood amb:11min to 130 max.

Coolant temp: 165 min to 170 max.

Engine Oil sump: 199 min to 207 max.

Fuel temp: 114 min 116 max.

This data was for his race fast lap which was lap 6.

Last Lap (17) data was;

Underhood amb: 127min  to 127 max

Coolant temp: 165 min to 169 max

Engine oil Sump : 207 min to 212 max

Fuel Temp: 125 min to 127 max.

Thanks guys.  Any NC data out there to share?  Am running the OEM sandwich oil cooler, which the Mazdaspeed guys say the Continental and World Challenge series cars use and is sufficient.  Somehow I think this may not be the case.  I'm measuring oil temp under the filter, which if I understand it correctly is where the oil returns back to the engine, no?

Rich,

Where is your water temp sensor? Fuel temp sensor?

Ron,

The coolant temp sensor is in the thermostat housing which has a 160 deg stat.

Fuel Temp sensor is in the engine compartment.  I use an Aeromotive quick connect style adapter that has the fuel drain port, fuel press transducer and fuel temp thermocouple all in one compact adapter that attaches using the factory style connector.

Also, the engine oil sump thermocouple is in the engine oil pan drain plug.

Previous post correction; Underhood amb min temp should have read 111 not 11.  Also last lap underhood minimum temp should have read 125 not 127. The AIM data logger data included the parade lap so in terms of actual race laps it would have been more accurate to list them as 5 for the fast lap and 16 for the last lap.

Curious because the fuel temp at 125* seems high. Is the temp thermocouple in flowing fuel or stagnant fuel?

Thanks

David

It is a 1/8 inch K type TC probe that is directly in the fuel flow path.
