it just looks like that because its set up to give me broom stick clearance from the hoop to the dash. When I mocked it up there is no way I can get it low enough for a hardtop so I decided to save the front half of the cage for a future build. Now that I am considering dropping the floor pan I might get under the hardtop.

Why the hoop to the dash, personal preference?  Go to page 111 and look at fig. 11 which refers to open cars that retain the windshield frame.  Even if you do the broomstick test like this you still need the hoop that high?

I saw that too and I still think that the broom stick test goes to the dash bar. On page 110, figure 10, shows the line being drawn down to what I'm considering the dash bar in the miata. As is sits, its only a half cage, not cut/mocked for full cage with front hoop.

According to a cage builder here in Houston, it only goes to the windshield on cars that have weight bearing windshield pillars like the S2000 or the Prosche convertibles. The Miata windshield pillars alone are not made to withstand a crushing force.

Good point....forgot you didn't have the front hoop.

Here is what happened last time I heard about anyone trying to drop the seat pan to make room:

This has been covered before. If you do a search for "floor" you'll find newbies asking the same.

But, I don't think you need to do the broom stick when your running a hardtop and

you would probably fit with a aluminum seat.

Kyle, have you ever viewed a picture of or stood next to the the two time reigning SCCA Spec Miata National Champion? The dude has some real size, 6'4", 300 pounds plus or minus a few pounds. A couple years ago at the June Sprints I introduced my at the time eight year old grand daughter to Jim. Later during qualifying we were between T7 and T8 and I said to Hannah, that guy Jim you met, that's him in the #2 car. Her exact words, he fits in that car.

Jim, post a picture of you in car and take Kyle out of his misery.

I'm 6'5" with a 36 inch inseam and I fit into an SM fine. Granted there isn't a ton of excess head room, but I fit. Do yourself a favor, buy a hardtop and put the full cage in the car. The road you are traveling down will lead to a car that is next to impossible to sell or probably even give away.

After playing with the seat some (35 degree layback) more I am able to get the main hoop down to HT height, but the top of my helmet will be an inch from the HT roof and right at the level of the broom handle between the main hoop and the (future) front hoop. This seems extremely unsafe?

It seems safer to run w/o a HT and leave the main hoop high. Am I wrong?

Johnny - The Cobra is my passenger/instructor seat. I am sitting in a USRP SM 16" w/o the bottom pad.

Honey Badger - 6'5" but what about from the floor to the top of your head when sitting against the wall? I'm not a dumb guy (unless its a loose cam gear bolt) and I don't see how I can fit under the HT safely w/o lowering the floor pan. Which I still have not decided on because I don't know if I want my arse to be any closer to the pavement.

Drago is 6'4"?

Any picture of you tall goons in your cars would be appreciated.
