It could very well be a chemical reaction in the gas and have nothing to do with the tank. There are a number of additives and it comes in different colors from different gas stations.  The spendier stuff looks even different yet.  I even remember now that some stuff I've stored in my shed has turned darker and other stuff hasn't.

I don't know that it's significantly degraded though from a combustion standpoint just due to the color.  You could always do some dyno tests and compare new gas to brown gas though and see what you find out.

I have dynoed, no difference in performance. Already darker though after one dyno session.  We run Exxon 93

my guess... oxidation. You dump it down the filler it makes tons of bubbles and oxidizes faster.

heat?  Tank gets really hot, especially after dyno runs.  There's a ~500 degree heater right below. I'm guessing different additives react differently.  And no Jim, they can't afford to put those additives in the special gas :)

I have an opinion so I must be right

Mine loops, so I was thinking it went to the engine and that was the heat source and returned, but the exhaust as a heat source works good too. :)

Good to discuss

It only takes a second to pop out the fuel pump as well as look in the tank

Exactly.  I've done it many times.  Just DON'T lose the screws down the side of the tank, not that I've ever done that!!!

I'm pumping out my gas to put new in and then pump out again. (no heat source) Things I do at 10:40pm on a Tuesday night.

Takes just a second... well maybe 2 or 3. :)
