Hey everyone.
I've been out of spec miata for a while and lots has changed since then.

I couldn't find it on the gcr, but are we allowed to remove all the hvac components now?

All parts of the A/C may be removed. Heater core, ducting and blower must be retained.

This is what the GCR states:

o. Cooling System

6. The factory air conditioning systems may be removed.
Items that serve a dual purpose, such as the alternator/air
conditioning compressor bracket, may not be substituted.

To me that means everything that has to do with the HVAC. I can't find anything specific to retaining the blower and heater core. Is it somewhere other than the SM section?

Make sure you look through the whole rule set.  I haven't looked in a while, but the rules on the cooling system were in the GCR twice after they expanded the engine internals rules.  They were both in the engine section and then again in a separate section but the set of rules in the engine section didn't match the set of rules in the cooling system section.  I need to read them again and eventually get off my duff to write a letter about that.

Look at it this way...not all cars came with AC. It would be silly to make you keep anything on the motor that was AC related when others never had it? You can remove it all. When the coil comes out there is a tube you can buy to replace the gap between the fan and heater core if you want to keep that functioning(defroster)

Heater core/blower, same as it was back in the day. If a rule is not present don't mess with the item. IIDSYCYC.

Generally speaking car rules, everything outside safety, drivers gear and roll cage is within the Spec Miata rules.

The catch-all here ("Items that serve a dual purpose,...may not be substituted.") is what keeps the entirety of the HVAC systems in-place for vehicles w/o AC.

IOW, you are permitted to remove the AC components (compressor, condenser, drier, coil...) however the other "dual purpose" items (fan ducting, blower fan itself, heater core, baffles/levers/controls, bracketry...the other components that can work with both the AC & heating systems) must remain.

It sounds silly and (IMO) ultimately is silly (when it comes to freeing up space & weight I'm sure for some people) but this rule's intent is to enable people who couldn't build a racecar out of a "100% base model w/zero options" donor to get down close to that point.

Now I would challenge someone to build a car with a 2" or larger dash bar between their front down tubes and claim the removal of core/ducting/blower fan was necessary for 'safety considerations' (like gutting the passenger door).

At this point you get into the "tortured rules"  environment.

Since brake pads are unrestricted, I want to use this super giant pad that only works with this fancy caliper, that only works with this expensive rotor. But my wheels won't fit with the big rotors, so I need bigger wheels. But the bigger wheels require bigger tires that don't fit under the fenders. Fiberglass fenders are all that will clear my large tires. Since brake pads are unrestricted, I can use fiberglass fenders!!!!!

Damn, that ^ sure looks like a brief historical trail of the production cars rules.

I get where you're coming from Dave but brakes/wheels/fenders aren't 'safety components'.

I'll admit to not having read through the GCR for references to the passenger door gutting but it has become one of those 'generally accepted modifications' using the basis of "safety gear" being free outside of additional cage mounting points.  Ultimately where I'm going with this is to removal of the controls, ducting, & fan while leaving the heater core in-place, hanging off the firewall for all I care.

I'm not going to say it's 100% clear-cut justifiable but think it gives one pause & might be worthy of a clarification on the 'cage rules' to eliminate any potential exploitation.

-rule modification being "all cage tubes must be of the same diameter & thickness"
