Hello all
We are building a 99 engine for fun mid pack use . What head height should i ask for from the machine shop ?
Engine was overheated so a small shave might be needed.
yes , i did read all 30 something pages
Thanks !

12.1.9. Cylinder Head: The gasket face of the cylinder head may be resurfaced provided the
maximum compression ratio is not exceeded and the minimum height of the cylinder
heads are maintained. The minimum heights of the cylinder heads as measured in the
factory service manual allowed are shown in the following table.
Model Years Minimum Height
(inches)
90-93 (1.6L) 5.245
94-05 (1.8L) 5.245

5.268 is the FSM minimum. Unless you are going to build something all out, this should be fine.

If the head had much distortion in it from overheating, it is likely not any good. The 99 heads dont hold up well to over heating. You can shave the deck surface flat, but the cam journals will never spin freely. We have straightened a few, but not worth the effort and nothing I would want to use personally. Check that before going too far

What Jim said...BOTH sides warp. When the head is disassembled, lay a cam back in its position and push down on either side...odds are it will rock over the center.
