Jim, have you view measured with a 3 X magnifying mirror? Dan, better than normal mirror??? I'm in the process of procuring a 3 X mignifying mirror, not that I do engines, want to experience viewing STR 3 X.

EDIT:
Does the CCC use a 3 X mirror along with measuring tool? Go to the full post »

Steve, thanks for the feedback.... All valid points.  I think you might be the one of the few people in the SCCA who could have someone legitimately disqualified and sent home having absolutely no idea what they were just disqualified for!

On your "pop quiz", I really don't know, but will guess exhaust side retainers on diamond wire intake springs?

Matt,  Thanks also.  In all of the times we have been through tech inspection, I have never seen an inspector use anything other than a digital caliper.  It's definitely the wrong tool for building an engine, but what they're really looking for are oversized pistons, which will be at least 0.010" (0.25mm) oversized.

That might be mistaken for a compliment. I must have left out the really important stuff, or I just like to keep a few things to myself, :-)

I guess I did leave out a few little things. I forgot to mention valve guides, which are an eventual wear item. Mazda offers replacements and I assume it is OK to use them, but tech should be checking their total length and the shape of the port-end to ensure that they are not shortened or modified. I wonder if anyone has decided to use sleeves rather than pressing the old ones out, whether because it's safer/easier or as a perceived benefit from using different material. I would guess that's not allowed.

I also didn't mention line-honing the block mains, another common machine shop practice that could be argued in the context of our rules.

I'll think of more as I get back into this and start assembling our engines.

On the pop quiz, no, but even if you were partly right you wouldn't get any credit without more specifics.

At the Runoffs, I always use snap gauges to measure bore. I have gotten a little lazy on measuring the stroke since I use a caliper rather than setting up magnetic base and all. SCCA bought us a quick check bore tool but I haven't used it enough to be comfortable with it. I need to play with it some more to make sure I'm using it correctly. When I built prod motors, we always line honed (bored) mains and bore. Bore was with a torque plate. I would think using the line hone with torque plate to finish over bore for Miata would benefit. Opps, sorry, I'm supposed to measure and report!

Dan, was that the motor that I sealed at Sebring? Looked like my seal on bolts and plate. And was that the same motor I checked cam on at VIR last year and looked at with bore scope at ARRC?

Here's Mark Drennan's engine being measured at the 2014 Runoffs....

Yes Jim, those are your seals from Sebring.  Actually said "JC" on the plate :)

Is that an adapter for an oil cooler between the oil filter and the block?

Yes, it's for the intercooler.   Kidding.... All of the 1.8L engines have a factory oil cooler:

No gasket, that flat surface is the steel header flange, welded to the tubes, all exactly as supplied from Mazda.

the technical term for that is "welded-ish".
