A great race to watch but it had to be frigging scary for the drivers. I was convinced we were going to have a repeat of the Las Vegas incident. Only 3000 spectators. How can this series survive? Pack racing at its best and worst. All that risk and only 35k to the winner. Ugg.

Great race!  So entertaining...it's a shame so few saw it.  Admittedly, I was a bit nervous watching it and very concerned for Briscoe...but he seems over it.

By far, the best Indy car race I've ever watched. Indy car raced with us a number of times in Pro Cup and I was always astounded to see how few spectators showed up. We were at Milwaukee Mile once and you could count the people in the stands. But, the hospitality areas were packed so maybe that's where the $$ come from cause it's sure not the front gate.

 

Glad to see Graham win his second race. Long time since last one. Montoya gave the race away by making his move too soon and trying to set car up on final run to stay low. He was flying on the top.

No doubt it was great race and entertaining... But no doubt that type of racing is pure insanity and stupidity with no fenders.  They can not and should not race like that again. Unless they feel the death of their drivers is worth the ratings boost and the drivers are dumb enough to race under those conditions.

We were at Milwaukee Mile once and you could count the people in the stands.

 

Jim, not to argue with you about the Milwaukee Mile, BUT before the car owners got heavily involved with Indy Car ownership (battle of the big deal owners) and organizing their races there was very good racing at the mile.

 

Really spectator attendance at the Mile is not  any different than spectator attendance at SCCA events. A great example was at the Sprints a couple weeks ago, a few curious spectators, a few razzel dazzle car owners. Through the 70's there were thousands of paying spectators at Road America events and into the 80's spectators started finding other recreational activities.

IMHO, Indycar racing is the most exciting televised professional racing out there - that race was incredible to watch.  Compare it to the NASCAR and Tudor races this weekend, I DVR'd them all, no comparison.  WEC is fantastic technology, but hard for us to relate in the U.S., other than Le Mans.  The Tudor race is exciting like watching chess or poker...mostly watching the strategy and and racers/car geeks like us paying attention to the geeky racing details.  The problem is we are all jaded from watching computer games and CGI in the movies - reality is quite boring by comparison.  The only hope I see for Indycar is smarter management and investment in whatever safety innovations can make what we saw in that race "safe enough" so that they can race that way week after week.  If they stick with parade races, they are doomed.

 

What got me into racing 7 years ago or whatever it was, was taking a ride in a 2-seat Indycar at Las Vegas.  3 G's and 180mph on that track was what made me say "I've got to drive a race car." So my SM isn't quite that fast, but it'll do..    IMHO, we've got to get the fans engaged - Daytona is on the right track with creating a "racing stadium," but we need to be getting fans on track in the passenger seat in controlled but exciting circumstances by the hundreds at these pro race weekends, and not stuck behind the fence getting a sunburn for 4 hours, and creating much better synergies between pro, club, and walk-up racing.

Indy Canada was rainy like Tudor at the glenn this weekend.

Just like some of your races when you just do laps or really have a fight on your hands.

Indy has there ride along with Mario.

NASA in my region has a lunch time drive behind the pass car.

They raced hard, mostly clean, somebody crashed and did a lawn dart, nobody got hurt, all in all, a good day.

Bench, I agree about attendance. It is off everywhere. Just look at the night NASCAR race at Bristol. For 30 years, the only way to get a ticket was to inherit it. Now, you can walk up on Saturday afternoon and buy a ticket for pocket change compared to what it used to cost.

 

And yes, we had some races in the late 90's where the stands were packed. It is easier for people to stay home, sit in their lazy boy with a brew in their hands and watch the show from in car, overhead and multi camera angles.

Aside from the flipping, I think the aero package at Indy created a good balance of  entertainment and safety.  Fix the flipping, and I think that is what they should aim for.

 

I was a huge CART/Champcar fan.  It took me a while to embrace Indycar, but I do believe they have the best show right now.  Aside from Fontana and Indy, I think the races at St. Pete, Barber, and Detroit were very entertaining.  I look forward to Pocono...might try to go.  In my opinion, Indy, Fontana, Pocono, and maybe Michigan are the only ovals those cars should race on.  There's a chance Road America might replace Milwaukee next year.  Fingers crossed.
