Steve, knowing track advantage to driver of red 1.6 car. On the day of this race had the red car stayed in the RPM range (2nd gear a couple places.) he would have beaten the yellow car.

Any 2nd gear places were 100% new to both drivers and by far the biggest challenge in getting setup compromises figured out quickly. But for a missed shift or two, also in the new auto-x section, it could have ended differently. And he yielded a couple times when he might have done otherwise with more on the line. So yes, they were close but you don’t know their relative tire situation which is big there.

Yeah, you can get a run out of a corner and pull alongside with a draft but it’s darn hard to get fully ahead before the air pushes you back. When it works it’s typically in those couple seconds between when the 1.8 has to shift and when the 1.6 does thanks to a higher redline. But that day conditions weren’t good enough to need 5th back by the S/F line so he had to make a move sooner.

The NA 1.6 does not need any help. They are worth more now as collector cars then they ever were as race cars.

Informal question:  Was SM improved by, and did Mazda profit by, the false flag battle-cry need for the "addition" of the NB to the class  (as a "certain underdog") that, according to sources and researchers and experts, was pressured by alleged NB operatives _________ (RIP), _________ (never ran an SSB in SM, as far as I know), and various SMAC/CRB and MazdaSpeed operatives that profited from the gambit.   

 

Answer:  "Mazda" itself didn't profit at all.  Nobody buying a $34K CX-5 gives a flying fig whether Prestus Pardon wins the Crash-Up-Derby in a 1990 Miata or a 2005 Miata.  But, everyone else had an angle.
