Hey, I have found a really good deal on a car to build a SM racer. The only problem is, IT has no title. All the VIN checks come clean. It's a 1990 1.6L car.

I am sorry. I tried doing a search through the rules and I couldn't find any information on it. thank you Brad

No. You do not need a title. I'm surprised a search didn't find anything. We've definitely discussed this before.

Thank you, Very much. $600 for a running car is the best price I have found.

Before you proceed with the purchase of a car or a race car, have you thought through and or documented your short term and long term goals?

Have you watched all the different SCCA spec line of cars race so that you know which spec line of cars finish at the pointy end.

SCCA Spec Lines:

1990/1993

1994/1997

1999/2000

2001/2005

I'm assuming that if the cheapest possible chassis is an issue then the "spec line" isn't.

A lot of people here will tell you that the base car is the smallest expense in this even if you buy a nice 99+, and if you plan to build a nice competitive car that's true. If you just want to bolt on the bare minimum parts per the rules, run used tires that others have given you, etc. so you can get out there and get started, then of course that's not necessarily true.

But, I wouldn't even consider buying one at any price if it is high miles and the underside is a rusty mess. You will spend more time and money snapping off bolts and taking things apart with a torch than you think you have saved on the car.

To be absolutely blunt, if a few hundred or even a grand more for the tub is really an issue then you are better off waiting. Save cash and buy a safe but tired race car that you can freshen up over the course of a year.

Well, This is probably going to be more of a track day car that I will run at Putnam Park Road Course. I am going to keep it with in Spec Miata rules but at how much I will have in the car to run SM. It will be a very long time before it sees a SM event. This is more of a project build for me to do. I don't plan on wiinning anything for a long time. I am just getting back in to track days myself. I am hanging up my racing leathers, two wheels, and handle bars  for four wheels, driving suite, and a steering wheel. I havn't bought anything yet. I am going to look at it first and see if it is a rust bucket or a decent car. Then I will buy it or not. As for the 1.6L vs 1.8L. I just want to get my feet wet and go watch a couple races before I really spend lots of money on SM Parts.

You do not need a title but you might want to look into why one cannot be supplied. you do not want to be party to a crime. also when it comes time to sell the car or salvage the car it might come in handy but you do not need to have a title absolutely..

Well, After reading and reading on the other threads, I think I am going to wait and look for a 99 and up car. I ran the vin on NICB site and it is not stolen, I talked to the guy that is selling it and he said it came in on trade for something and no title. He also said it would take more then the car is worth to get a lost title in MO.

Bought a "no title" parts car a few years ago.  Found four live 9mm rounds and two empty casings under the passenger seat.  Makes you wonder.....

Yes, after looking at the no title car for 600. It had to much rust. I would have to replace more body panels, rocker panels, and floor than it was worth. In Indiana, I don't mind a car without a title as long as it's going to be a race car only. I have had three dirt circle track cars without titles. No problem selling them either. As for the SM cars. I am new to this game and trying to read and absorb as much as I can. At first I want to get my feet wet and build a safe SM track day car. I know I am not going to win anything big yet. I just want to start out right with a solid donor car. Now as for having live rounds and spent rounds in a no title car!!! I would shy away from that too!!! LOL
