If you are looking to get a look at Indy before next years Runoffs, this is IT. Unless you race SVRA its not likely that you will get a chance to see this track.

 

MORPCA (Mid Ohio Region Porsche Club) is going back again to Indy this year in August. I am on the committee putting on this event, I am trying to get a dedicated run group for competition license holders, so it will be solo driving unless you want an instructor in the car.

This is a DE so we can pass anywhere in this instructor designated group but they like you to use a point by, so I will be asking for your cooperation on this, Indy is not the typical host track they are particular about who they let run at the facility.

 

Some background

 

For years car clubs have been trying to get on this track to do club Racing or Driver Education events. Indy has never had an interest in us. How long did it take NASCAR to get an invite?

 

Two years ago, after some persistent begging, our PCA club received a special invite to come do a Driver Education event as a test case. They picked us in part because we had a good reputation and history with Mid Ohio.  We did a DE last August. We were the first non racing, non professional group to come put on an event for some time. It was costly, this place is huge, and unlike any venue you have driven. Its the facility, the history, its impressive.

 

Happy to report we did not screw it up so we were invited back and we are putting on a repeat event. There will be only a few opportunities to get on this track. We have a good relationship with the track but our return next year is not guaranteed.

 

So if this is an interest to you this is an opportunity.

 

Indy is different, track goes hot from 8 am to 6 pm non stop. its a 3 day event I would expect 4 20 to 25 min sessions per day for 3 days.

If you are referring to a Comp License only run group. It will depend on the number of drivers we get who have licenses. we need to have 45 to fill a run group.

If they are mostly Miata's if will be perfect but it depends on who signs up. The event is more than 2/3 full so if your interested in going i would sign up.

OK, so comp group determination will be made from existing registrations.

Yes what they are struggling with is the question," is it better to have all the drivers with comp licenses in one group and a second group of instructors",  or " combine these two groups of drivers and split them based on the speed of the car".

 

It will depend somewhat on who signs up. There are pros and cons to each.

If anyone is interested in instructing for the weekend send me a pm with your email address i will get you hooked up. We need a few more instructors.   This is a 3 day weekend at the Brickyard. The instructor rate is 245.00 for 3 days 4 sessions per day. should be fun weekend.

I am told they are putting us with a comp license in a separate Run Group, they will not call that a "race group" but the passing rules will be the same. Passing anyplace with a point. It is basically an instructor group. I will confirm the details as we go forward. We have a meeting coming up and can update shortly.

If anyone from Dallas (or close by) is planning to go and wants to figure out shared transport - let's talk. I'm signed up and either need to figure out how to get my car there (I'm not going to tow solo for 13 hours) or I'll rent.

For me this is simply a fun bucket list thing. I watched multiple F1 races there and the facility was great.

Hi Frank,

 

I and fellow buddy Harry Dugan are late to the party on the wait list.  I sent an email to registrar (Stetson) but can't see the roster (some load error).  When you have a sense of how realistic it is that we'd get a bump of the wait list (me in open passing and Harry in novice) I'd appreciate it... we're making plans to come from out of town.

 

Sounds like a heck of a cool event!

An email went out today to the drivers asking if  you want a garage and/or if you want to opt out. The rules at Indy are restrictive, you cannot park your trailer near the garages or park it there to unload, they want you put what you want to store in the garage in your truck and drop it off.

 

I have elected to opt out of a garage. I am going to work out of my trailer, its a paved paddock and we will have plenty of room work out of the trailer and to put up an awning. I am going to have them set aside an area so that all of us Miata guys can park together so we can laugh at the Porsche guys lol.

 

No golf carts or scooter allowed, but i think bicycles are ok.

 

They have not yet confirmed if Camping is going to happen, i will post as soon as that decision is made.

 

They have asked me to remind the Miata guys that this is a DE, we are to point people by or wait to be pointed. you are not required to run a window net. This track is pretty organized, Its Indy, they have a camera on every foot of track. They have a room filled with monitors so if your driving like a butt head in a DE they will call you out.

 

Our region is pretty sensitive to being a good guest as we are one of the few non racing clubs to come in and use the track.
