From the SCCA website:

"It should be noted that while the road to the Runoffs has been simplified, firm qualifying rules will be in effect stipulating drivers be within a percentage of a class pole time at Indianapolis Motor Speedway next year."

I guess it is difficult to predict now, since we don't know there will be a spike in majors participation ... but does anyone worry about a "Registration Race" like COTA had a few years ago?  Indy is a going to be a big deal and at 2.439 miles, and 25 cars per mile, that is 61 cars.  If we factor in the 10% car count rule allowed by the steward, that bring us to 67 cars.  Daytona in 2015 has 62 cars on the grid with the old qualification rules, so do we think this could pass it?

I think this qualification path is great for every class, with the exception of Spec Miata, due to possibly hitting the limit early in registration

The GCR has procedures for handling over-subscribed run groups (split the qualifying sessions and the fastest in each session start the race). I've heard stories from "back in the day" where 60+ FF's would show up for a weekend at Lime Rock (limited to 35 starters) and this was done.

Having driven the Indy circuit, it is similar to Mid Ohio IMO, about the same size two big passing zones, and a lot of tight corners. We did not get to 65 cars this past year but it is likely we will at Indy. This will be a challenge. The good news is that its relatively safe for offs, there are only two places where the concrete walls come into play. otherwise there is lots of runoff.

Even with last years qualification standard in place it would have been over subscribed. My point, It going to be over subscribed unless you really raise the bar on qualifying. It looks like the SCCA is going the other way.

I have heard that some of the folks were unhappy with this decision, but out of their hands.

Last I asked someone important, the configuration of the runoffs at Indy had been de-selected (the 2.439 mile config) and they were still considering (as of this years runoffs) which configuration they were going to use.  If you notice, the 2.439 config is no longer listed on SCCA website and Prill had commented on the prod forum awhile back this information - including that the config was removed from the press release on the runoffs config.

I could be wrong if a final decision has been made, but if that happened I had not seen it yet.

Even if they change the configuration, it only may add like 2-3tenths of a mile, tops?  Only adding a couple cars.  I would just hate to see someone like a Drago, Bolanos, Hille, etc cant get in to the runoffs cause of a registration race if anyone can show up.  Not saying it will happen, but it could. I agree that lots of cars qualified and didn't show up this year...but you also had NASA the same weekend and Mid-Ohio isn't the biggest draw IMO.  Indy is more towards the middle of the country, and first ever SCCA race there at an iconic track, I see it filling up quickly.  There were 271 different drivers that entered in a Majors race this year, 268 in 2015.  Even if it stays the same numbers, I think we could easily hit 70-80 cars at Indy, putting it over the track size limit.

I wouldn't mind seeing something like, "if you don't meet the 50% rule in your conference or nationally, then you are on the wait list for like 2 days after reg opens" so it gives time for the people who would have normally qualified a chance to register on time and get the free tires.  It may not be an issue, but it could potentially be.

And, So the GCR says it would split up the sessions and take the fastest times but, where would they really find the time in the schedule to split up the qual sessions and take the fastest 65? Are we going to get half of the track time?

I personally don't think SM needs this rule, but other classes do, so I guess I will support it?

Instead of qualification requirements, I think if you're getting lapped at the Runoffs you should get the black flag and pull in the pits. Gives slower guys a chance to be in the big show without causing a lot of grief for those that are running for the win.

I resemble that remark!

(but I spun at T9 and ended up in the gravel for 2 laps so that's my excuse...)
