No matter what wording is used, you are not going to stop that one driver from wanting to take advantage of any situation.

 

Maybe he slows to 52% instead of 50%. Or closes within 5/8 of a car length instead of 3/4. We all know when we do it wrong. Simply put, in a yellow condition, local or full course, do not improve your position, do not pass, do not do anything stupid, stay in complete control of your car. Do not endanger safety people.

 

Just as we all want respect for each other as drivers, we need to give more respect to the people who make our fun possible.

Point A.

Under a full course yellow if a driver doesn't "take advantage", close the gap, I'm sure someone who is behind someplace along the way is going to have a little talk with said driver. Point being no one owns the yellow flag gap. Same for standing or waving yellow flag, no one owns the gap.

 

Point B. Don't remember if it was Council or SCCA at the Farm several year ago, full course yellow for at least 3 laps when coming off T1 a SRF lost control, went inside track and crushed legs of 1 or 2 workers attending to peer driver. Existing rule or proposed do nothing to change/improve said situation.

 

Point C. Agree 100%, but it's proven at every race during yellow flag situations, respect is not conveyed by drivers when on track.

 

 

How fast do I need to reduce speed?  

 

What's to stop me from just taking a foot off the gas and coasting as much as I can?

Point A. You have a functioning Speedometer on your dash. You read your speed is 100 mph, you reduce your speed by 50% to 50 mph. Take your foot off the gas pedal.

 

Point B. Nothing and the corner worker recognize your lack of speed reduction, call in your car number and you get a black flag drive through. The black flag will send a message and folks will learn in a hurry.

I still don't see a spec for what minimum deceleration is acceptable.  Sounds subjective as hell.

Yup, you and Johnny come from the same state. 50% of existing speed is not nearly as subjective as todays or the proposed yellow flag rule.

The current rule is pretty clear once you've been to your first race. Nearly full speed if you can see the track is clear but expect to be castrated if you have an off.

Well, 2 different things here are being discussed. The spotter app(now gone)or this year was called track flags are voluntary and require a phone with wifi in your car. Flashes current track status and/or corner status. Concept is fine...implimentation has been weak.

 

The JAWS device is a small flashing LED light mounted to the roof of your car. It is activated by the driver via a switch. Mandatory for the 25HR race. Actually VERY visible and would be tough for any oncoming car not to notice. Worth the $100 NASA makes you spend to race IMO!

 

We had to use it this year after an on track incident and limping back to the paddock. Ironically, one of my other cars was 10 seconds behind the crash. The car we hit got going shortly after us but did not turn on his light. My 2nd car was following another car through turn 8(high speed)when that car suddenly veered left at the exit exposing a limping car(with no light on)...my driver drove 4 wheels off track right barely avoiding a big collision with the slow moving car. Had that light been on he may have been able to react sooner. He passed our other car that also was limping but had its light on and he could see that from a turn away!

So someone posted up a video of the incident I described above! Even though the driver of this car sees 2 yellow lights(2 turn stations) he has to react quickly to a car that suddenly appears in the dark! Imagine this car having NO lights in the same position and speed and you will understand why NASA implemented the use of the J.A.W.S.!! 

As the video car continues he will come up on another car that is moving with the light on(This was one of my cars that had hit the MX5 factory cup car after it had spun on track in front of us  )You can see it from a long ways away and immediatly signals other drivers you have a problem! Ironically the video car comes around again past the MX5 and it still had not put on the safety light! As mentioned above in my first post another one of my cars was a little behind this video car (following a car)and barely missed the slow moving car in the middle of the track even though he had slowed...just much harder to see these things at night! The light really helps when used. These connect straight to battery so in theory if you lose power(ignition/kill switch problem) you can still activate it.

Nothing to add regarding yellow flags, but with respect to suspension options I don't see much point in any combination of changes that does not include the front sub frame. And I REALLY don't know why it would makes sense to allow everything EXCEPT the larger front bar on the 1.6 for the few who might want to try it. If one of our goals is to make all cars more similar overall why is that such a sticking point for some people??

I take that back, partly. Superseded parts don't require any rules changes, so ignoring those I could see allowing just the NB rear uprights for the stated reasons. Beyond that just allow the full swap.

not agreeing or disagreeing..  but to sticking point...

many NB drivers would like the opportunity to have option a or option b as well..  There is a school of thought that an NA car is an NA car, we should adjust the best we can and leave it an NA car.  I can see both sides of this.

I agree. So for me it's probably just the rear uprights (and front bar because the NA 1.8 already has both), or essentially all suspension & steering with subframes.

Frankly I think all cars should get a new front sway bar, all being the same and one that actually fits well on the car.  The 1.6 front bar is very overrated due to how short it is and the crappy angle of the links to connect it or the ridiculous spacers/shims needed to get the links close to vertical.
