My GoPro Hero2 recently died, and initially thought about just getting another used Hero2.  The Hero cams are up to their 5th gen now which seem like it's made some nice progress over the older Hero2.  I realize there are also many other options out there and have tried a few in the past such as the Contour (easy to use, didn't care for the quality).  The vast majority if this camera's use will be for racing, so other features outside of this application aren't that important to me.

Getting the video aligned and seeing a preview is nice such as an app that connects to my iPhone.  Easily being able to start the video recording even if done by someone else (with the Hero2, some people messed that up and I missed some footage I really wish I had). Also ease of watching the video on TV (1080, not 4k) as well as uploading to some basic software to cut down to actual racing.

I have a RAM camera mount that I've used with my GoPro 2 that I like.  It would be great if I could use that with the replacement camera.  (I don't want to get sucked into buying many additional accessories such as having to buy something to preview it on my phone.)

Budget is a factor, but am seeing GoPro 5s for around $325 for sale.

Another GoPro?  If so, suggested generation - newest always better?  Hero session, gold, black?  I've done some research, but ugggg! Thanks!!

I recommend the Mobius1080P camera - under $70 on Amazon,

Great picture quality, nopt 4K capable and not as good as HERO4

Your existing mount will work, it syncs with Traqmate, so it's not necessary to have anyone else turn it on.

And you can edit with many free programs.

Fully adjustable exposure, contrast, white balance and other controls if you want, or leave to default if that is not your thing

However no preview to iPhone, but it takes 2 minutes to shoot a few seconds, take out the card load it to your laptop and see how you want to adjust your  mounting position

All in-car camera footage from my cars for the past two years has been on Mobius - watch in 1080HD to see (and remember this is still compressed from the original footage) -

+1 on the Mobius.  Cheap and works great.  Can be programmed to start recording on USB power signal (which works great with my Traqmate).

What I'd like to hear are some recommendations on best/easiest way to edit down a session's video into selected highlights.  I find it very tedious in everything I've tried so far (Sony Vegas, RaceRender, Dashware, iMovie).  What are others using for "post production"?   Maybe it's inherently tedious?  Maybe I just dont have the patience it takes to do this? Or maybe, just maybe, there's more friendly software out there that would make it easier?

Agreed on editing!!! I have video editing software on my phone, which is super quick and easy to trim. I've thought of trying to use that as my video camera, but don't think it would fully work as I hope.

The Mobius1080P sounds interesting.  I had almost talked myself into the Hero5 this morning. lol (I don't have trackmate or any other data acq system now, and that's not in the budget.)

Not sure I'm seeing the camera you're suggesting, unless this is truly it?

Thanks guys!

Camera Mobius, editing clips, Power Director 14, probably way more horsepower than you will need but it is realitively simple with about 10 mins of YouTube lessons and you are up and running. About $75.

Money aside and having a preview screen, what additional value does the GoPro Hero5 bring?  Is the video quality much better?  Although I've always like Danny's videos, so maybe that's not even a factor.

Editing functionality - has any used the GoPro editing apps?  Using this, is the editing / trimming an easier and quicker process?

Does seem like the unit you have mentioned it the smarter choice.

GP5 resolution and pictures are great but in the end you are spending a lot of money on something that won't be used.  Recording in 4k is ridiculous memory drain and if you plan on uploading you will be without your computer for most of a day since the file is so big.

There's a part of me that wanted the fancy toy, but agree the Mobius makes much more sense given what I'm truly after.  Thanks again for all of the suggestions and advice.

One more question... what are you doing for sound?  Just using the camera's mic or doing something else?  Need to do anything to buffer the wind noise?

How does the Mobius mount to the roll cage? Does it have a tapped hole?

uses standard 1/4" tripod mount - most roll bar clamps support this

I have used the GoPro editing software on my computer.  I haven't used it recently so maybe it has changed.  It was easy to use but a few things bugged me about it, but maybe this is how all editing software's are?

You would load your video from your GoPro into the software in format A.  The software would then convert to format B saving it to your computer.  You would then edit your footage and output final product to format C, another file.  So when all is said and done you have 3 different files on your computer taking up LOTS of space, original, converted, and final.  Granted once you are pleased with your final product you can delete unwanted files to free up space.

Not being an expert in the field of video editing I didn't and still don't understand why I had to do all those steps to get a final video.  Why can't I just load format A right from the GoPro and start editing?!?!

As I said before this may all have changed with the new versions of GoPro.

You can also edit right on YouTube.

I just bought a Mobius ActionCam.  It works great as a web cam, connected to my computer, and records to a micro-SD card.  It *should* be able to output to an Android phone or tablet, but I haven't got that working yet.  Apparently, it takes a certain type of cable, and even the certain type of cable may not be the *right* certain type.

As Danny has shown, it takes beautiful videos.  Does anyone here have any experience using an Android device as a viewer?

RESOLVED: I just got an OTG cable (https://www.amazon.com/gp/B0091QLXW8): micro USB-B to USB-A(female), that plugs into my Android tablet (Asus Nexus 7). I then plugged a "standard" mini-B to USB-A cable between the Mobius camera and the receptacle on the OTG cable.  It took trying several different mini-B/USB-A cables to find one that worked, but eventually one did.  I bought the Android app, Mobius ActionCam, and was able to connect to the camera in both Webcam and Mass Storage Device modes.  So now, using my tablet, I can view/change settings on the camera, and see "live" video from it.

I'll be putting the Mobius in my car for the race at Summit Point this weekend.  I'll post some videos after the race if anyone wants to see how it looks.  They won't be as exciting as Danny's videos, to be sure, but hopefully will be as clear and sharp!
