Registration for the PCA DE at Indy has opened. Registration is on clubregistration.net, information can be found on Motorsprtsreg.com and morpca.org

I had hoped i could talk them into setting aside one or two run groups for Racers and not have to follow DE point by rules, but that was not in the cards. Bluntly, we are not their primary customer. So If you want to go you can sign up in the advanced run group and run the track. its the same circuit as the Runoffs except its missing one small loop before the back straight.

The information about the event is below. I am not involved in running this event, just a member and have no pull.

They do not allow camping in the paddock so you will need a hotel.

Frank.

**  Indianapolis Motor Speedway  ***

Fri/Sun HPDE

August 11/13

Yes, you are reading this correctly, INDY Baby!  MORPCA is hosting a 3-day weekend event for our return to the world famous Brickyard in 2017.  This will be MORPCA's third year offering an exclusive HPDE at the Brickyard and the only such PCA HPDE event there in 2017.  We will be running the Indy Grand Prix course (with a possible twist), crossing the start finish Brickyard strip on the main straight.

Beginners* are welcome for this 3-day event!

You can anticipate that this HPDE ticket will be in high demand again this year, as it was sold out the last 2 years.  SCCA has announced that they will be holding a national racing event at IMS in 2017 shortly following our event, so you can expect high SCCA advanced driver demand for practice time.  So we encourage you to register early to secure your spot before it is sold out for another year.  All run groups will operate under PCA HPDE rules for point by passing in each run group.

There will be 2 Instructed run groups and 4 Solo run groups.  Instructed drivers (Green/D) will have to meet minimum Beginner HPDE experience requirements (*that being at least one other HPDE event at one other track).  MORPCA and other PCA regions offer many opportunities to get that minimum experience before Indy 2017.

Many more event details will be found on the MORPCA Web page as they are announced.

 GARAGES:

New this year we are adding a specific garage spot registration feature in ClubReg, allowing you to request/be assigned a specific garage spot to help coordinate your desire to "hang with your friends" or get that preferred location at Indy.  If you have such a request (not mandatory), make sure to use that Option when registering.  Otherwise comp'd garage assignments are assigned in order of paid registration until all spots are gone.  If you prefer to park you car / stay with your rig in the east paddock and forgo a garage spot, please let us know that too (see registration question) so we can get as many drivers as possible a garage spot.

  Registration for INDY opens

Saturday @ 6PM (for all) EDT

with reduced pricing before May 29th

(with payment)

so visit the Registration page (event #8079) on:

www.clubregistration.net

Track Hotel

(special discount rate w/ comp breakfast link available soon in another email blast):

Wyndham Indianapolis West

2544 Executive Drive

MORPCA has revised our refund policy on MORPCA run events to make it easier for you to sign up!  Check out the details on Club Registration pages for the above events.

See you on track in 2017!

Thanks Frank!

The map on their site does not include turn five from the SCCA map. As I recall, the same was true last year. When you ran last year did they include T5? Is it your understanding that they will run the same configuration this year as last, or something different?

It is my understanding they will NOT run the SCCA turn 5. They will run the same as last year. On this original email blast they had a picture of the track map but i could not get that to copy over on this post.

OK, 5-6a is the small loop you mentioned. It doesn't seem small in video and I wasn't thinking of that as the back straight, but of course it is. Too bad they don't include them.

Part of indy Runoffs deal was that that track configuration not be run by any other organization before the Runoffs

Have one seat open in MX-5 Cup in June, running at Indy! Not sure of the track config for that event.

This PCA event is lots of track time. No camping at the track.

Full disclosure: SMAC chairman, my opinions do not reflect anything to do with the SMAC unless specifically stated.

All the miatas had to go to the principals office at least once. PCA and miatas are not a great mix.

Lap times are all going to be very close to each outer at the runoffs. My prediction is top 20 within .3

My recap:

First off the PCA guys did a nice job with the event and accommodated us very well. We are certainly not their typical customer.  The INDY staff was strict, but very good.  You are not getting in that place without a wrist band. You can't even proceed from paddock to paddock without passing a yellow coat and showing your wristband.

As far as the track and opinions..

First off I understand that Indy as a venue is supposed to have this magical allure and want to bring us all in like the field of dreams. It seems to have worked as we have obliterated the record of Runoffs entries.  However, if you were to take that road course and put it anywhere in the country less in the center of IMS, I doubt many of us would ever return?  I have been a fan of Indy and the Indy 500 since a child, however I was not swept over by some sense of nostalgia.  I had no butterflies in my stomach passing through gasoline alley or over the yard of bricks.

The track requires very little skill to get around

The track has no corners that remotely raise your heart rate or require any %^&*

The track has Zero fourth gear corners, most are the bottom of third.

The track has no second gear corners.

Turn one is a tight off camber one line corner that you struggle not to run off at exit( at least I did) The chances of all cars making it through turn 1 is as close to zero as imaginable.

The fact of the track being very easy to learn ( all will be up to speed in two sessions) and no corners requiring any courage to separate the field IMO will result in the top 20 being covered by .3-.4 . You may also see some of the "better" guys qualify outside the top ten and some of the mid pack guys closer to the front as I think a draft, traffic and a little luck will have as much to with grid position as overall skill and car preparation.

Hoping the track races well, looks like there will be for sure passing on main straight, most likely on mid straight and probably some opportunities coming out of the infield and going up onto the banking before diving back in to the infield. Curious to see how much turn 5-6 and the faster turn 7 change things up. IMO, it will be different for sure, but not enough to effect much overall change in my description above.

My grades

venue and effort A:

Track itself C-

There are far better tracks for us to race at, I am looking at this as more of an event.. The track without being inside IMS is not worthy of hosting the Runoffs IMO.

Thanks for the report Jim.  I think I would agree with pretty much all of that. On iRacing, I think the most difficult corner is the corner that you were unable to run. You carry a lot of speed into it, and it is a long decreasing radius left hander that you have to get the car all the way over to the left before flicking it back right for a sharp right hander. I wonder how much pavement we will be able to use on the exit of it, or if they will try to limit us from going too far out there.

I hope the track is like Daytona. If you drive around Daytona by yourself ... it is one of the most boring tracks you can drive. But in a pack, while racing, it is very intense fun!

I also hope we can all make it through T1 as clean as possible, but I know it is tight.  I think guys on the inside may wash out and hit the guy on the outside. We might also see someone jumping the rumble or even cutting the course unfortunately.

I will add it was nice to Have Tim Auger come in and rent/sort our new white 99 build.  He ran the new car on Friday and Saturday and on Sunday we brought in the Rossini Ringer, Preston Pardus and he drove the car Sunday. The car never missed a beat and Preston actually ran .1 faster than me in my car.

BTW the car is available for rent at the Runoffs

This is an anecdotal opinion, but it has always seemed to me that the best dedicated circuits (not airport courses or street circuits) in America appear to have been laid out by a dude that had a French curve, or possibly just got drunk and drove around a hilly field on a Ford 8N with a drag blade until it looked and felt right, and then fixed mistakes and added safety concessions later.

Making a track that brings smiles in a 125HP car on 8.8" Continental slicks is probably something hard to code into the "Track Designer Pro" app that will be used by robot architects and laid out by autonomous construction equipment as soon as 2020, according to people paid to say things for the Internet to hear.

I would agree with Jim if there was a track you can learn in one practice day its this one. It will take you longer to tour the Museum.
