I want to add a cross brace to my rear down tube in the cage I'm welding up but in order to add the tube at the landing plate I would have to notch very close to the fuel tank so I'm hesitant. Would it be effective to add a cross brace from one corner and weld it directing to one down tube a few inches above the rear landing plate?

Its better than nothing.  You can also weld in a gusset to support the bending created on that joint or put a backing tube on it to connect it to the trunk floor.
