I have looked and did not find clear answers. Are products like Aimsport or Stack able to get data directly from the canbus, Or is the old ODB too slow, or good for things like temperature, but not RPM?

Only useful CAN data in these vintage cars is coolant temp and battery voltage. Just the standard federal channels and 1hz max.

Thanks, that was the impression I was getting, but was hoping different.

For RPM output there's the pin on the diagnostic block (where you short the fuel pump) that sends the signal from the coils (I'm guessing it's the coils).

Most of the daqs can receive that signal natively with the right interfaces. I definitely know Traqmate (RIP) can with the proper 25-pin adapter plugged in & wired to the block.

Not to hijack the original posting, what pin on the TraqMate is used for the rpm input. Does their "adapter" have any actual electronics inside?

There are/were two types of adapters for "RPM only": one with an included wire (to be crimped onto a wire from the car) and the other being a series of screw-down lugs to hold the wire.

@Brandon Appreciate the response. I was wondering if there's anything fancy inside the adapter. Could I just run a wire from the diagnostic port the back of the TraqMate? If so, just wondered what pin in the socket does the adapter input to.

Have never pulled one apart to learn the pinouts or if there are any other internal electronics to support the signal into the DAQ.

 

Best of luck if you do decide to tackle it. Traqmate is no more as far as I know.

I opened one up a while back to look and it has components inside, decided it was easier to buy one than trace out what they are for, although I suspect mostly used to condition the input and protect from spikes.
