All changes are effective 9/1/2017 unless otherwise noted.

GCR 1. #22332 (Todd Butler) Appearance Neat and Clean for Competition In GCR section 9.3.6, clarify as follows:

"Specifically, cars that are dirty either externally or in the engine or passenger compartments, or that show substantial bodywork damage, structural or surface rust, or that are partially or totally in primer, or that do not bear the prescribed identification marks shall not be approved for competition."

Caveman, don't know if your doing Runoffs or what your exterior coverage coat is, if it were me I'd have some mfg. written info proof it's not primer. :scratchchin:

That seems reasonable.

Tom, no question, I totally agree. My comment was to Caveman, because some of the tech's are older than me/dirt and may not understand the semi gloss/whatever his final paint coat is.

The first time I had viewed the same dull cover paint was a bunch of years ago when I had a 94 5 speed manual Super Coupe. A friend from Shorewood, WI wanted me to bring it to an auto show at a drive in food joint because he knew there would be a 94 Super Coupe there with IIRC from leading edge of windshield forward being 1951 Ford and rear window trailing edge back 1951 Ford, painted in same dull cover paint. He came a bit late, parked parallel and we all had fun watching folks compare the two cars and scratch their heads.

As we pulled out of the impound area after Sundays Grattan race, a tech official commented about a tire mark on the nose of one of my cars. Outside of this one black mark, the car is pristine. No dents, no swirlies, no bad stickers. The tech guy said the scuff mark on the nose (which is through the paint and on the bumper itself) needed to be fixed befor the next race. He said the GCR says that. For once, I bit my tongue and walked away, not wanting to argue.

The new wording covers, dirt, substantial bodywork damage, rust, primer and the prescribed stickers. It says nothing about tire marks. And who decides what "SUBSTANTIAL" bodywork damage is?

Would it be a stretch to believe that when a new rule such as this is rolled out that SCCA HQ issues some sort of information to stewards on how to apply the rule?

All changes effective 9/1 so they jumped the gun Dave on your black mark.

Also this is Prelim right ?

It give you enough time to tell them what you think of that black mark and what they can do with it. :)

Well i would not tell them to include tire marks and paint imperfections. SCCA does its best to make this unpleasant. I think there should be some requirement that the test is at 30 or 50 feet at 30 to 50 mph. imperfections that cannot be detected to an observer at the edge fo the track should not be flagged.

The rule has not been changed, other than the word "substantial" was added, so that little dings and marks are no longer considered worth a DQ or log book notation.

psssssh we will be fine. All the cars the stewards race are the slow ass H-Prod midgets that look like they are about to fall apart driving to the grid.  My shit all banged up is still better looking than more than half of that production group.

Dave, you and I both know that a tech guy telling you fix something as a car leaves the grid has no official status. Unless it gets written up or is entered into a logbook, that comment is nothing. Now, he may or may not remember it the next time he sees the car.

We had a couple of cars damaged at Charlotte this past weekend and I made no entries in any logbook.

PS. The prod guys have been advised cars coming to the Runoffs need to meet this rule. Walk down the grid in EP & FP and check them out. Yes, HP does tend to get a little rugged sometimes not normally at the Runoffs. With a total of 140 prod cars now entered for Indy, I may be busy this year. Normally only 90 or so.

I have no idea what your talking about SENILITY  finally has you in its clutches time for a home for you... I have never run any primer on my car, my car has been the least dented car in the ESR tent eveytime I have been around, except maybe before jim and the boys roll out of the trailer in the spring...  Now if your talking about the luck thats on my car, that may be against some NAZI rules!  I dont wash off the fairy dust unless I need to change my luck.  I spend my time on prep that makes speed not like the karati kid wax on wax off!

You all realize that any action taken about dented SM cars came as a result of the SM community bitching about on track contact.  The discussion was that there would not be so much on track contact if the cars weren't dented before the green flag dropped.  In spite of that, the change in the rule is actually more liberal than the old rule, which allowed a steward to bust you for any damage.  The new rule says significant damage, which means they can't mess with you over any little ding.

Maybe it just me...receiving contact and fixing/repairing contact are 2 different things.

But I understand and agree with repairing significant damage, but even there it's how soon.

That weekend, the next session? Best attempt at repair that weekend and fix it before the next race ?
