Among the lists of items for sale are Mazda MX-5 Miatas, Ford Mustangs, and Porsche 911s.

After 40-plus years in the business of grooming the skills of drivers and racers around the country, Skip Barber Racing School filed for bankruptcy in May. Now we’ve learned that the school’s assets will be auctioned off over a three-month period starting August 29 in Braselton, Georgia.

The auction was announced by Liquid Asset Partners of Grand Rapids, Michigan, the entity tasked with selling SBRS’s stuff, and it will include most or all of the physical assets owned by the “Skippy schools.” This includes engines, transmissions, spare parts for its training vehicles, and race equipment. It also includes hundreds of vehicles, including semi-trailers, trucks, and lots and lots of chewed-up sports cars, including Mazda MX-5 Miatas, Ford Mustang GTs, and Porsche 911s. We think the school’s collection of open-wheel training cars could be of particular interest to amateur racers interested in taking their endeavors to the next level.

barbermiata-1503077084.jpg?crop=1xw:1xh;

Also set to cross the auction block, according to the company, are some historic vehicles that, depending on their condition and actual history, might be of interest to collectors.

Liquid Asset Partners is also offering the Skip Barber Racing School brand name for licensing or outright sale to anyone who could make use of it. “The demand for Skip Barber Racing School training is very high, and it’s amazing how most men know the Skip Barber Racing School as the best of the best,” said Liquid Asset Partners owner Bill Melvin in the company’s press-release pitch. “It just needs the right structure for it to grow for another 40-plus years.”

Interestingly, since SBRS’s 11 partner racetracks around the country are said to be among the entities to which SBRS owes serious debts, one of the chief beneficiaries of the Skip Barber Racing School liquidation could be Skip Barber himself. Barber, now 80, relinquished ownership of his racing-school enterprise in 1999 but has owned one of the school’s partner racetracks, Lime Rock Park, since 1984.

Despite the bankruptcy, Skip Barber is probably the most recognizable name in advanced driver education. We’ll be watching to see if anyone is willing to give the school another green flag. In the meantime, if you’re looking to pick up a well-used sports car, more information about the auction can be found here.

A pair of 2013 MX5 clubs went for $8k each at the televised Mecum auction.  The catch with the Mazda cars apparantly, is that they are all being sold on "bill of sale" meaning they dont carry a title and cannot be operated on public roads.

Seemed pretty cheap to me, but i'm sure they all need some work..

My experience with auctions is that things can go really, really cheap depending on what is offered and where it is held. This might be a great chance to pick up something for a good price.

Maybe someone from the area can attend and relay prices. Not sure how much flex there is in payments.

I can’t trust myself at auctions so I had put this whole thing out of my mind. Did anyone buy anything or follow it closely?

A word of warning. I would stay away from any flood car. yes you can get a deal, but I have had a few in the shop over the years. Nothing but problems. Usually wierd electrical issues. Unless you have an identical tub to transfer from, stay away is my advise.

There will be record numbers of those in the very near future. I think I saw Jim negotiating for more space in the neighborhood the other day.

Winding Road Racing Forms Partnership To Support New Race School

WRRATLRevelUP_jpg_677x1000_q100.jpg

Winding Road Racing, together with our partner Atlanta Speedwerks, has purchased a large portion of the Mazda MX-5 race cars previously owned by the Skip Barber Racing School. These 13 cars will be used in part to support a new racing school program operated by Level Up. Level Up was founded by Skip Barber veteran Peter Stolz, and utilizes some of the most experienced instructors in the country including Jim Pace, Steve DeBrecht, Keith Watts and Terry Earwood. Stolz has seen the good and the bad of traditional racing schools and intends to deliver a fresh approach while leveraging successful practices.

Graduates of the Level Up program will be able to apply for provisional SCCA wheel-wheel racing licenses. With a few additional post-school race weekends, graduates will have their full competition license requirements completed. Winding Road Racing and Atlanta Speedwerks will offer car rental and arrive & drive services for these follow-on weekends. The idea is to make it straightforward and quick for someone to be able to go racing competitively.

The MX-5 Cup race cars are ideal for schools. They combine forgiving handling with driver conveniences like power steering and ABS. Winding Road Racing and Atlanta Speedwerks will provide mechanics, tools, instrumentation and spare cars to maximize student time on track.

The 2018 calendar for the southeastern and southwestern U.S. is now being developed and should be announced before year end.

It’s an ambitious undertaking but I hope they can pull it off and deliver a great introductory racing school program at a somewhat better value than Skippy and other traditional schools. Those have a place and have been very good but they were a little too pricey, and for lack of a better term serious, for some would-be beginners. I’d like to see Level Up fill that niche. I will certainly talk it up amongst the local car enthusiasts and track-day junkies. I’ve even got a couple of the drag racers in the adjacent shop wanting to build cars over the winter after attending their first road race as spectators. They had absolutely no idea such a thing was out there for amateurs.

I went to BIR Performance Driving School for a 3 day program which immediately gets you a SCCA full comp license and it was great. Not to mention the cost is low and the quality is extremely high.

I checked out Level Up but couldn't find any pricing on the website. I would be interested to check out the Level Up program and compare it. My favorite part about BIR was that we did a lot of mock races. The class room time to on track time was well balanced and instructor to driver was 1 to 1.
