Is there a best year or years to start with? I have searched this topic but cannot find any current opinions.

thanks

What's your budget?

Sub $15k ~ Competitive NA1.6 or NA1.8 car

More than $15k ~ entry level NB

Do you plan to buy an already built car or build your own?

See above for budget insight.

If you build it, it will be to your preferences and on your budget.

What tracks do you plan to race at? Local only?

Find past results of these events and it will help provide a good hint on what model year cars are competitive for your region.

Provide us all with more information with your goals/budget and we can provide a more refined answer.

Great questions, I would like to build myself excepting cage work.  Looking for a winter project. I had a 1.6 that did not feel competitive to me. Could have been my driving or the car or both. My closest tracks are VIR/Summit point with most of my time spent at VIR. So I was thinking  1.8. Id like to keep it under 25. Ive looked at results for NASA mid atlantic but they just show class not year of the cars winning......

There are countless discussions but the most recent useful info is a recent topic “Worth it to Build a New 1.6 Motor?” undee Spec Miata Engine Performance.
Instigator - Made a topic or post that inspired other Broken record - You are starting to sound like a broken record.

Considering I run in this region, we have a fairly good mix. If you take the latest results from 10.8.17, the podium positions were:

#316 - NB1

#97 - NB2

#24 - NA8

Typically pending track and who shows up, you'll see a mix between NB1, 2 and NA8 fighting it out on the tip of the spear. If you have any questions from an operations perspective, etc. feel free to email me or message me here.

Just go NB if your budget is under $25. There are some good cars already on the market for around that number or just under it.
