The Devil in the Dark 2018 ... is on!

The South Jersey Region and New Jersey Motorsports Park announce the ninth running of The Devil in the Dark 12 Hour endurance race on Thunderbolt Circuit at NJMP. The 2018 edition will be held on Saturday, 27 October 2018 and will again race around the clock into the night.

To enhance this year's event, the Region distributed a survey this past summer for endurance participants to determine their interests in long distance racing. A substantial number of responses were received - Thank you for those who participated in the survey. These responses were overwhelmingly positive and contained several suggestions for improving the event. The survey results are on the region website: 2017 Endurance Survey Results

Again this year, the Region is offering a companion event - The Devil during the Day 6 Hour endurance race. The 6 Hour will run concurrent with the 12 Hour. This year a Spec Racer challenge will be included with the 6 Hour. The 12 Hour rules and procedures will be utilized. There will be separate results and awards for the daytime race.

The format and rules will be very similar to the 2017 race with no major changes from previous years' events. An adjustment will provide allowances for street tires to make them more competitive with DOT R Comp tires. The only change to the Endurance Classes will be the separation of Spec Racers to their own class.

This year the Region incurred a very significant financial loss on the 12 Hour due to a drastic drop in the number of entries. With this loss in mind, the Region plans to ask for an earlier commitment from competitors and is reserving the right to repurpose the weekend if a sufficient number of entries are not on hand at the beginning of the summer.

There will be an SCCA Test Day on Friday, 26 October for 12 Hour competitors and other closed wheel cars.

The entry package will be posted online by the end of the year. Registration will open on 1 February 2018.

Racing around the clock again in 2018!

27 October 2018 -- SAVE THE DATE!

The Devil in the Dark 2018 News

Millville NJ, January 2018.  A draft version the event supps for The Devil in the Dark 2018 has been posted on the Region website.  This version is substantially complete but will not be official until approved by SCCA.  This is an advance version for teams planning to enter the event.  Registration for this year's event will open on 1 February.

There are very few changes in the 12 Hour regulations for 2018.  A small number of items highlighted in the recent endurance survey have been incorporated this year in an effort to broaden the competitor base.

A major change for this year's race is the event date moving from its traditional April slot to the end of October.  It was the time of year most preferred in the survey and the one which creates the fewest conflicts with other events.

The only significant update to the car preparation rules this year is a pair of measures intended to encourage the use of street tires (TW 180+).  Competitors who use street tires in this year's race will have the option to ( a)  run in the next lower Endurance Class or ( b ) run in the same Endurance Class with no wheel / tire size restrictions.  Parity between street tires and DOT RComps was the single most requested change to the race format since it provides the opportunity for a substantial reduction in a team's race budget.

The only change in car classifications is Spec Racers have been moved to their own class to eliminate an existing class inequity.  In conjunction with the separate classing, a new 6 Hour Spec Racer Endurance Challenge will be a major feature of The Devil during the Day 6 Hour race.

There are no changes to the event operations - driver eligibility, pit stops, fueling, etc.

Reminders

There will be an SCCA Test Day on Friday, 26 October for 12 Hour competitors and other closed wheel cars.

Registration will open on 1 February 2018.

Millville NJ, May 2018. Registration for The Devil in the Dark 2018 12 Hour Endurance Race is now open on MotorsportReg (direct registration link). This year's event will be run on 27 October and is the only long distance SCCA endurance race in 2018.

Again this year, there will be a companion race concurrent with the 12 Hour - The Devil during the Day 6 Hour race. There will be separate results and trophies for the 6 Hour which will feature the Spec Racer Endurance Challenge.

There are two very important dates approaching for this year's event. The first is the end of the 'Earlybird' entry fees at noon on 1 June; entries received prior to this date will receive a $200 (12 Hour) or $100 (6 Hour) discount from the regular entry fee. The second date is 6 June when the Region BoD meets to consider its go-no go decision. After last year's substantial financial loss, the Region established a date to determine whether it has sufficient commitment for a successful event or whether it should repurpose the weekend for an alternate event. Teams considering this year's event are urged to commit by the end of May.

The only significant update to the car preparation rules this year is a pair of measures intended to encourage the use of street tires (TW 180+). Competitors who use street tires in this year's race will have the option to ( a ) run in the next lower Endurance Class or ( b ) run in the same Endurance Class with no wheel / tire size restrictions. Excellent time of year for this race and weather typically great around here in the fall.  If you haven't tried an enduro before, come out!  Terry and crew roll out the red carpet, there is a place for everyone... the stories of needing a fire breathing Porsche and pro crew are greatly exaggerated.  We took third overall in an NC MX-5 last year and yours truly surely not setting the world on fire with pace.

They've open up rules to include the higher tread wear tires (IE AER setup) whereas you can run a class slower.  There are no more excuses... bring back the years of 50+ cars for events like this and VIR 13 hour (which is no longer).

Registering in the next week or two.

The Devil is intended to be an endurance race.  For that reason we open the 12 / 6 Hour portions early.  The 2 Hour is designed to fill slots not occupied be endurance racers.  The 2 Hour portion will open in late summer - there will be announcements here when it does.

Hope to see ya at The Devil

Entries received by noon on 1 June will receive a $200 (12 Hour) or $100 (6 Hour) discount from the regular entry fee. The event registration is available on MotorsportReg (direct registration link).

The beginning of June has extra importance for this year's event. On 6 June, the Region BoD meets to consider its go-no go decision. As a result, there will be no disruption in the schedule and the race will be held in October as planned. It's a Jersey Affair

Millville NJ, July 2018. This month, the Northern New Jersey and South Jersey Regions announced they will jointly present The Devil in the Dark 2018 12 Hour endurance race. This event sharing arrangement harkens back to the 2010-2014 races when the two regions developed this premiere endurance race. It brings together both Garden State regions to enhance the quality of this year's 12 Hour.

To recap last month's good news - the boards of both regions have greenlighted this year's 12 Hour. As a result, there will be no disruption in the schedule and the race will be held in October as planned. The regions wish to thank all of the entrants who have committed to this year's race and encourage teams who have been in "wait and see" mode to start planning for this year's 'around the clock' endurance race.

The event registration is available on MotorsportReg (direct registration link).

Again this year there will be a companion race concurrent with the 12 Hour - The Devil during the Day 6 Hour race. There will be separate results and trophies for the 6 Hour which will feature the Spec Racer Endurance Challenge.

The 12 Hour / 6 Hour endurance races are open to production based cars running on DOT approved or TW180+ tires. "If it is safe, it can race". All recognized road racing licenses are accepted. The supplemental regulations for the 2018 event are on the South Jersey Region website. Contact Chief Steward Terry Hanushek for any questions or clarifications.

Reminder

There will be an SCCA Test Day on Friday, 26 October for 12 / 6 Hour competitors and other closed wheel cars - you do not need to be a 12 Hour entrant to test.

Two Months to the Green

Millville NJ, August 2018. After talking about The Devil in the Dark 2018 12 Hour endurance race since the beginning of the year, we are just two months before this year's event. The summer race season is winding down and it is time to firm up plans for this year's 12 Hour. Are you ready to take the challenge?

The Devil 12 Hour is the only current SCCA long distance endurance race. Its traditional day into night format continues to be a popular attraction for endurance teams. This year its date has been moved to the end of October to avoid the early-mid season schedule conflicts.

To recap last month's news, the Northern New Jersey and South Regions have reached an agreement for the two regions to jointly operate this year's race. Volunteers from the two regions will work together to further strengthen the organization of the annual 12 Hour endurance event. Drivers from NNJR and SJR are encouraged to support our 'home state' endurance race.
