Don’t be tempted due to the lack of new front shocks to have Delta Vee Motorsport rebuild you current shocks.  Old shocks are better than no shocks!

According to all my sources, including Mazda, shocks are not available until Mid April. Nobody can give me an accurate answer if that means; they are being made in mid April, shipping from Germany, arriving in USA or available at the warehouses. To my knowledge there are no shocks anywhere in the USA. I am on a backorder list with at least 6 major warehouses.

As per the last rules, shocks must be as delivered from the manufacturer. Thus any rebuild service is considered non-compliant by the SCCA experts. Even a stock rebuild is illegal according to SCCA. So be carefull with what you do.

I am not taking sides or offering an opinion on any rebuild service. Just passing on what I have been told. Buyer be ware!

Based on the new rules and what has been said above...can a lay person(tech)look at a SM shock and tell whether it has been opened or not? If in fact they can...I assume this would make a shock dyno obsolete?

And if in fact it is easy to tech...which may have many freaking out since they know they have rebuilt shocks...will SCCA and NASA be allowing a grace period since the shocks have been on back order for awhile?

Lol - you guys are silly.  There are plenty of shocks available.  I have been running Yellow Koni's with a Bilstein sticker on them for years.  Haven't been tossed out yet!

No, you can not tell without open up the shock and even then you might not be able to see/measure any difference.  When I used Steward Development for rebuilds (other than the sticker) you could not tell.

Well the procedure of the week is currently..

if the shock dynos outside there "acceptable graph", they are supposed to send to Billstein and have them opened up and checked.

None of the rebuilds unless built exactly as stock "should" pass that test

problem is Billstein cant guarantee what was put in your shock when new  and built at their factory:)

Its time for a new shorter sealed shock and a ride height rule...

That will get us off the bump stops

way less wear and tear on the suspension and hubs

the tires will likely fair better as well

Can't say i would like a ride height rule any more than a Max Camber rule for the same reason. Not sure I would want to see a new shock that would require everyone to switch. However, Not a good situation to be in where no one can buy a shock or build a car till mid April that is not is acceptable.

Somebody has inside sources or has sowed the seed for this discussion already :)

If the cost of a new shock remained about the same I would be all for Jims suggestion!

How long have we been driving on the same shock...hasn't technology advanced?

It would have to be 100% sealed shock

It would have to have a tolerance factor way better than we have now

It would not be mandatory

But given how this class has always reacted this is going to be a long bridge to cross...

Assuming the new shock is superior those that don't want it can stay on the old shock.  It is less than the cost of set of tires.

No Penske infinitely adjustable remote reservoir shocks?

I would add that a new shock should not be externally adjustable.

Agreed, shorter, fixed with tighter operating range tolerance for testing.

Sometimes you dont get what you want, you get what you need :)

Most all of us have been crying about hubs failures, subframe failures, running stickers which is killing tire life as we use tires as suspension.

If we had some resemblance of an actual suspension, 99% of these problems go away.. A ride height rule insures we dont get back to what we need to fix, it also eliminates lots of testing.  Set the ride height rule similar to what most of us run so adequate camber can be had and we keep adequate suspension travel

Not really possible.. But if the shocks were 600-750 a set I think it would be a great call.
Consider tires are $780 a set... I think if most used a little common sense.. This would be money well spent.

I don't always agree with Jim, but I do this time. A spec shock that is truely sealed, TAMPERPROOF. with a cost of under $200 each would be perfect. get the length right, get the mounts right. Come up with some sort of a ride height and/or Camber rule and we may have an even better class. Remember these Bilsteins are street car shocks off the 1993 Miata M Edition. They are nothing special. We have figured out how to make them work, but at what expense?

2 cents worth
