What is it, and why should I have it?

 

The Mazda Signature Exhaust system is designed for simple installation to current rules, utilizing the transmission tunnel notch and compatible with drop floors. Unlike previously manufactured systems, this has heavy-duty hangers,

 

Like your race car, this is built for racing – there is adequate ground clearance to keep it from dragging on even larger curbs. It is made from 409 stainless steel, resulting in years of service and a lighter weight than its predecessors.

 

Advancement in muffler developments allow a quiet, yet free-flowing muffler that doesn’t choke up the car, proven on both the dyno and the sound meter.

 

As an added bonus, and an auxiliary but nice benefit, the muffler sits further to the rear of the car than many exhaust systems on the market. This places it below the stock rear heat shield, making the cockpit slightly cooler.

In the earlier versions of this exhaust several racers that have used this exhaust experienced the internal baffles in the muffler coming apart causing restriction. Has that problem been fixed in this version?

Whatever the answer don’t bank on more than what you’ve already read above. How loud something is depends on the distance and numerous environmental factors, so trying to put a meaninful number on it is pretty much pointless unless used for comparison to others tested under identical conditions. If they answered simply 110 db what whould that mean to you? If they said 90 db at 20 meters across a mowed grassy field (2” dense Kentucky blue grass) on a 75F day with 52% humidity and still air, would that be louder or softer than the nominal 100 of brand X?

What are typical sound levels with this exhaust?

I have no idea what the sound level is on my (new) kooks exhaust. Steve correctly notes that that number varies with several conditions (mostly distance) and it depends what metric you are measuring. However I can say that it has a different frequency response to my previous Missouri exhaust, with a reduction in the upper mid frequencies (hence less “bite”to the sound). If I were to guess, it’s 4-6dBA quieter. Noticeable, but not dramatic. I prefer the sound.
