The battle for the $30,000 Mazda contingency awards prize for earning the most points across any eight SCCA Hoosier Super Tour Spec Miata races results in a narrow victory determined at the last Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour event of the season.

Winning in Spec Miata (SM) is one of the most difficult challenges in motorsport. The competition and the talent of the drivers and teams, year-after-year, have shown us that those who succeed in SM, succeed in anything racing – club or professional. Patrick Gallagher, Andrew Carbonell, Selin Rollan, Tom Long, Elivan Goulart, Mark Drennan, and the list goes on. It’s been a springboard for many, as well as a destination series for many.

SM racer, engine builder, and owner of the Texas-based SM prep shop X-Factor Racing, Chris Haldeman, has proven over the years that he is one of the best SM drivers in the world. Michael Carter, teenager, driver for Rossini Racing Products, is known for his infectious smile even when not winning a race. But don’t let that mislead his competitiveness. Carter may be currently the best SM driver in the world. For those who follow the class, you knew this would be a battle of titans. And knowing the special talent this season, Mazda Motorsports put up an additional $30,000 contingency award to be paid to a Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires team for a two-event sponsorship in 2019 on behalf of $30K SM Challenge winner.

Heading into the final Super Tour round at Watkins Glen International (WGI) this past weekend, after 12 races each, Carter was leading Haldeman by a mere six points, 180-174. Unsure whether Haldeman may show at WGI in an effort to snag away the SM $30K Challenge prize, Carter played it smart and made the journey from Savannah, Georgia. Competing against Tyler Kicera and Elivan Goulart at WGI was another test, one which had Kicera taking both wins, but the journey from Texas did not happen for Haldeman. At WGI, Carter took a second and third place finishes, making it 12 out of 14 races with podium finishes, maintaining his eight-point margin, and claiming both the Hoosier Super Tour Spec Miata championship and Mazda’s Spec Miata $30K Challenge award.

With three race wins, six seconds, three thirds, one fourth, and one 12th place finish, Carter proved he can compete with the best at every track, every time. It should be no surprise that the only SM racer to finish with more wins this season than Carter was Haldeman, bringing home four race victories out of 12 races.

Mazda Motorsports commends all Mazda drivers, and tips its hat to Michael Carter and Chris Haldeman for putting on a show this season that everyone was hoping for.

This being my second year running regionals, I'm planning to try some ST and Majors next year with my over dog. Running 8 super tours might be a dream though. :(

Congratulations to Michael on a great season and winning the scholarship money.

I didn't read the qualifications. Seem VERY silly that this was not awarded with the Super tour points title.
I was excited to see Chris and Michael battle it out at the runoffs for the title and the scholarship money. IMO, a poor decision to have this decided in a different fashion than super tour championship, I think less reading the fine point, most had no clue, I didn't.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but how many drivers even attended 8 Super Tours?

Only 20 drivers met the requirements. Interesting.

I completely thought it was decided at the runoffs. I was happy to go into the runoffs with a single point lead in the super tour points. I would have for sure gone to Watkins had I known. Honestly if I knew it was 8 races I would have made quite a few different decisions thruout the season.

Apparently no one else can read either...I'm sure someone would have given Chris a heads up when his name wasn't on the WG entry list :(

Michael isn't leading the Hoosier Super Tour though, and it is decided at the runoffs. Chris has 139 points and Michael has 138.

However, I can't find any information about the $30k prize anywhere... I even searched the Mazda Motorsports page and nothing came up in the beginning of the year for it. Weird.

Well it looks like the Carters were the only ones in the know... Something tells me they didn't bother calling Chris and giving him a heads up :)

I'm a little confused by the rules as well. Doesn't Chris still have the chance to make ST points at the Runoffs?

Ahh I actually have a vague memory of that contingency form. It is a shame that it is not on SCCA's website and you have to dig for it on Mazda's website.

But it says the best 8 races of the Super Tour Series, and it says it only uses the runoffs finishing position as a tie break.

Michael's finishing positions: 1, 2, 2, 1, 2, 3, 2, 3, 12, 1, 2, 4, 2, 3

So: 25 + 25 + 25 + 21 + 21 + 21 + 21 + 21 = 180 points

Chris' finishing positions: 3, 6, 1, 1, 8, 2, 1, 1, 4, 5, 5, 3

So: 25 + 25 + 25 + 25 + 21 + 18 + 18 + 17 = 174 points

Chris is still leading HST points and the Runoffs count as a 7th race. Michael won the "Spec Miata Challenge" but has not yet won the HST.
