I don't advocate anyone not following the rules.. but if don't plan on being anywhere near the contingency awards and you read between the lines... I think a solid case could be made for running one set of tires and possibly even pump gas.

I follow all the rules. After I qualify on the tires I have left and then put the new ones on for the main I'll be in the running for hard charger! 😁

Was just hoping to test the legendary durability of the Toyo that I read about on the internet by running the same set all weekend.

The intent of the tire rule is to make sure each competitor is on exactly the same tire.  New and not shaved.

Basically run whatever tire you need to do well in the qualifying races to get you near the front! After that game on!

Though I agree with a spec fuel...it would be nice to use just the track stock pump gas. A fuel that is truly different and requires a cost to optimize puts a kink in what should be a simple requirement. And it creates inequality based on budgets and time!

Good luck with the hard charger. If I were to guess, it will most likely be earned by a pointy ended driver who got wrecked or broke in one of the qualifying races and has to start in the back. Made for a fun charge up to the front this past year with Haldeman, Charbs, and Henderson :)

Speaking of Hard Charger award ... isn't it like a $10k award? I would just show up, do test days and practices so I know the track a little bit. And then just not run the qualifying races. Start in the back. Collect the check. Go home.

There will be two groups, so you'll want to put more effort into your sand bagging to ensure you are in Group A where the award will be presented I imagine.

Aiming for Group B champion here!

Didn't know there were two groups for the big race? How many people are entered and how many make the main race?

I think I saw 110 earlier this week (5 more needed for the full 80k). How they split up the race groups is undecided but I do see two hard charger awards, so your plan still stands!

I looked at it a few minutes ago.. looks like 15-20 duplicates. I counted 90 actual entries with 15-20 listed twice for some reason

At 90 I would think that is going to be 1 race? I wonder what cars per mile NASA allows or would this be controlled by COTA?

I think they overestimated the draw of big payouts. Why would someone who knows they don’t have any shot at the front and would likely even miss the feature race bother? Indy got a record turnout simply because it was Indy and few had ever raced there or ever will again. It will be cool to have a championship race at COTA but that’s not enough to bring out the numbers they predicted.

Car counts on the track is dictated by the track safely around 20-25 per mile.

the payout IMO is not divided the way I would have done it.. I assume they felt with a winner take all type of payout we would race harder? I think it should have been spread down to 10 and then some random numbers pulled from a hat after the race and hard charger..

I'm assuming that means 85 max at 3.4 miles

I just want enough cars for their to be a group B race and I crowned King of the Larrys.

As for how they split up the two groups - We've thrown around ideas in here in Texas. I personally think it should be based on fastest lap time on Friday for the qual race and then finishing position for the championship where groups are divided evenly.

85 was the max set out by COTA when we ran the first SCCA race there years ago.

25 per mile is what I've always heard with  SCCA. I would imagine every track has a say or their own policy. Doesn't SCCA have a policy by which they will push the envelope by maybe 10% depending on the situation? Unless Lemons doesn't count as racing we certainly know some tracks don't care or allow more cars given a specific event.(per mile)
