fixed: Laguna modified SD exhaust was banging on the 4 corners of the half shaft flange. used a hose clamp to tie down the exhaust to the subframe brace. Problem solved. Go to the full post »

I just did a transmission swap and offset bushing install, and I'm getting a clicking sound in forward motion only. it sounds like four clicks of diminishing frequency and the repeats.

happens when car is rolling forward, whether or not it is in gear. no noise in reverse. it isn't particularly loud and I don't feel it in the shifter.

I have feeling that it is something simple. FWIW, sway bars are currently disconnected and I installed an exhaust strap to prevent my exhaust from hitting the diff.

Four clicks of diminishing frequency and the repeats:

Front, middle or rear of car?

With clutch pedal to returned position or pedal to floor position?

Engine rotation speed?

Wheel rotation speed?

Get a helper to walk (run) along side when making noise to help locate.

Without really thinking to deep about it, what you describe sounds to me like what I hear on cars that are not using the stainless steel brake pad clips between the pads and the caliper brackets.  As the wheel rolls the pad lifts off the caliper guide due to the excess clearance and then drops back down due to gravity accompanied by a metallic clank,

I agree with RWP. Apply very slight brake pressure and see if the noise goes away. If it does, it is probably brake pads floating and banging on their mounts.

thanks guys, I'll double check this weekend. I'm trying out either carbotech or cobalts (can't remember), the bigger one that doesn't allow the springs to fit in there.
