Since we are in the Silly Season now (except for Cal Club folks who have their last race in early November), I'm curious how you folks feel about a common rules set for what I like to call "Vintage Spec Miata" or VSM.

The goal here is to give the NA Spec Miatas a fun place to play under the umbrella of vintage racing.

My thoughts on this are as follows:

1.  Open to all NA Spec Miatas (1990-1997)

2.  Current SCCA and NASA Spec Miata rules (difference is largely tire choice).  I think we should keep it open to both.  This includes the current weight and restrictor plate (not currently used) rules.  The idea here is that these cars will be able to race in the Spec Miata class in a SCCA or NASA event in the same exact configuration as they will be raced in vintage racing.

3.  No contact (this means no bump drafting)

4.  Standard vintage racing 13/13 rules regarding contact, overly aggressive driving, poor judgement, etc.

5.  Drivers will understand and respect the vintage racing culture.  This is "gentleman's (and ladies) racing" and not hardcore SCCA or NASA racing where contact is tolerated, if not expected.

Anyway, these are my thoughts on a vintage Spec Miata class and I'd like to hear your thoughts as well.

In full disclosure, I'm a Larry who is getting back into Spec Miata.  Current plans for me are to race my '97 Spec Miata with both the SCCA and VARA and maybe SVRA.

I'm confused. I thought this already existed in the SVRA ...

Think I might favor going with the Toyo (NASA spec tire) just because of longevity compared to Hoosier. Might change whenever we seen the new SM8.

John, my understanding is that the SVRA's Mazda Miata Heritage Cup wasn't a permanent thing.  I know they've had the cup series for the past two seasons.  However, I don't see a dedicated class on the SVRA's website.  Also, I'm not aware of other vintage racing orgs having a class dedicated to the NA SMs.  I could be mistaken.

I don't know what the rules are for each region but surely the NA miatas, being almost 30 years old are close to being eligible for vintage racing. Just enter a Miata into the vintage group and you have your rules under the umbrella of SCCA. I agree no contact should be mandatory and penalized as necessary.

no reason to be confused but i think people forget about SVRA....It already exists with them.....

simple rules set.   nasa and or SCCA prep rules for 90 through 97 spec miatas.  you get your own run group and test days are included.  1.6 and 1.8's are classed separately .

2019 schedule is already out.  look up individual events to see which ones have the miatas

Adding to comments by Marc. Included for the Spec Miata's is Thur. test day, practice, 2 Q sessions and a race Sat. and a race Sun. All for around $3??.00 for 2018. Mazda in into this right up to their eyeballs. The normal entry fee is $6??.00. Didn't look at 2019 entry fee.

SVRA Miata Heritage entry fee was $325 in 2018, and then Mazda Motorsports refunded $250. I have not heard of a MM rebate for 2019 yet, but if it's over it was great while it lasted.
