Hi all,

My local track is introducing a little race series for members only. Allowable cars are Spec Miatas and Spec Boxsters. I'm wanting to dip my toe in to some W2W, and I figure this would be an inexpensive and low-stress way to do so.

I have poured over the rules doc, but it's a LOT to take in at once. I was hoping I could list what is done to the car, and you guys might be able to help me out with what else I needed to do to be "legal". Please note that these most of these parts were purchased in 2012.

Car is a 2003, all factory except:

Installed:

- Cage (cage is compliant, built by a shop that has prepared many SMs)

- Schroth 6pt harnesses installed correctly

- Kirkey Road Racing seat w/ halo on right side, and window net on left side

- Team Dynamics Pro 1.2 15x7 +25mm wheels

- Mazda suspension kit including Bilstein struts, Eibach springs, sway bars, and toe-links

- Momo Model 78 Steering Wheel w/ Longacre splined quick disconnect

- "Green" intake filter

- Aftermarket exhaust system of some sort w/ a cat & a muffler

Not installed yet:

- Spec Miata Timing Plate 1999-2005

- Longacre Battery kill switch

Stuff I know I need:

- Restrictor plate. I think it's the 40mm one?

- Fire suppression system. Any recommendations?

- Transponder

- 205/50/15 Toyo RRs

What else do I need to make the car legal? I'm not necessarily looking to add every little thing possible allowed in the rules to be fast (though those suggestions are welcome) -- but mostly I'm interested in the minimum I need to do to make the car legal. After that, I can focus on optional improvements.

I assume you are talking about Jacks plan to run race series at MSR Cresson?
You best best would be to take your car to X Factor Racing (Chris Haldeman) and let him help you. It will save you a ton of time.

Like others said, it would be easiest to talk to a prep shop.

However if you read the rules a few times and ask questions people will clarify.

From what you say I think you need a transponder, a fire bottle (suppression system isn't mandatory in SM), a restrictor plate, and ballast to make minimum weight. After that you will need a sanctioning body to check your car and issue a logbook (they will stamp an identifying number in your cage that matches the book).

If you don't have W2W experience/do not have a competition license, I also recommend a licensing school if you have one in your area.

I haven’t seen / heard the Cresson Member Race Rules yet, but you might be pretty close.  (I’d guess a SM or SPB with current logbook would be good to go).  Keep in mind a logbook has nothing to do with a car being SM complaint.  Weight, restrictor plate, suspension, exhaust, timing plate, etc., are part of a NASA / SCCA tech inspect, which is different than annual tech (logbook).  NASA’s annual race car form is a decent reference https://www.nasapror...pector_form.pdf

Kill switch, hand-held fire bottle and tow hooks will be needed along with the proper decals. Belts will probably need to be current.  I’d advise have someone (MER or X-Factor) inspect the seat and hard-top mounting.  Getting proper restrictor plate would probably be wise just in case someone decides to be stickler.

Mazda, Toyo, Hoosier, etc., decals are not required, they are only needed for race contingency.  Likely the focus on Cresson Member Races will be on safety (no contact allowed) and having fun.

I think it's hosted by Harris Hill. Danny mentioned something earlier about a race this weekend if I was available.

Toby and Johnny gave you a nice list of what is needed and what you might want to consider.

Chris @ X-factor can help you out or Clint @ Gas Head Motorworks are good Texas resources.
