I've done the search, and found no answer so I'll pose the question:

What portion, if any, of the evaporative emissions system are we permitted to remove on '99+ cars?

I'm coming from a '96, where the only evap items are under the hood, seeing these hoses and (purportedly) problematic & heavy charcoal boxes near the fuel filter makes me think they should be removed.

One link on this site mentioned the looping of some lines in/out of the tank and filler neck (and only on '99s) but my recent memory of that area doesn't recollect there being this/these lines to loop. Unless they were referring to the larger lines from the top of the tank that appear to go down to this undercar area.

Any guidance or a reference I could look at?

Pictures of what others have done for both areas (filler/tank & fuel filter area)?

Thanks

I did this one ^^,   you have 2 lines from the filler  === to canister, and do this =>  <=

Brandon, on the 99 and up cars I'm pretty sure you are not allowed to remove any evaporative part.

In terms of looping the lines, I have a hard time attaching pictures but will try to give u a description here.

Open the trunk on a 99 (and presumably 2000 car)

As you are facing the trunk, on the left there may be a block off plate obscuring the filler neck. If so, remove it and carpet if present.

You will be looking at 4 tubes, part of them steel with rubber also

The big one is obviously the filler.

There is a smaller one about 1/2 inch. Leave that alone.

Between the big one and the 1/2 inch one are two 1/4 inch apprx steel lines that each have rubber hose extensions that disappear in to the top of the fuel tank through a black shroud. Look above and in front of the biggest tube to see them disappear through the shroud via another steel tube attachment to each

These are the lines you loop

Take one black one off one metal tube to the tank, then take the opposite one off the tube on the filler end. Loop the black tube to both lines at the filler side and do the same at the tank side. Essentially connecting the two steel lines at the filler side together and separately doing the same at the tank side.

There is nothing about this that is done above the tank ( from inside the cockpit) unless someone has already done something to the tubes before you did.

I have seen a SM or two where there are no tubes coming out of the black shroud where the filler went in to the tank and I suspect they were removed above the tank or something done to them. But if you have a stock untouched car you will find those tubes. If you need a picture just pm me your cell and I will text u a picture. On this site I have a hard time getting the images to upload due to size.

The reason for doing this is to avoid the car from running rich presumably from overflow into the cannister in the engine bay. I may be slightly in error there but that's what I can recall from asking Dave W ( RIP Dave we miss u)

Anyway I hope that helps

Did a double-check on my car (currently at cage builder) and it turns out I have a '00 so don't have the doubling of the tubes/pipes in/out of the evap and filler neck.

Still, my explicit question about the canister(s) under the car (which aren't part of a NA8): can those be removed to ease access to the fuel filter (and its obvious weight savings)?

I think you are talking about the square box near the fuel filter? That's the charcoal cannister. I don't think it can be removed
