Why eliminate the NA6 and not just work on balancing the performance? Based on the talk I hear, it's the NA8 that's the real beast on track and perhaps the basis of this entire thread (threat?).

That's why I don't remember hearing any of this with VVT and 99 .. so much so I have customers who sold their 99's to build VVts now selling their vvts to build 99's
And then all have the same aero that NA owners often complain about.. same suspension geometry.. same looks.. no ugly headlights..

They could also go to SRF or the new Spec MX5.. I think you have mentioned that a "few" times. But thats not what we are talking about in this thread. You can start another thread asking why people don't migrate to those classes if you like

Spec MX-5 is a Mazda-sourced class, and not an SCCA or NASA requested one.

 

It's a minor distinction but it's not like there has been a push with either sanctioning body for another class made up of that selected list of parts.

If you want to claim my rephrasing of your suggestion is "my idea" then admit it's a case of you wanting to run faster lap times in the NBs.

And then you'll get the bashing of "then race STL like Steyn" instead of trying to hide behind reimagining SM as one you would prefer.

 

If you want to race faster, go to another class with your platform.

If you want to raise the performance baseline, then suggest that.

I THINK what you guys are missing/forgetting is that part of the rationale is/was to make SM more attractive in general, to current racers as well as prospective ones looking for a class that looks good. I’ve had more than a few, particularly track-day guys, react unfavorably to the fact that an already slow car is slowed even more with 100 lbs of ballast and a straw to suck through. These days that doesn’t compare well with any of the track/race “competition”. So it’s not at all unreasonable to at least explore whether SM itself will continue to lose participants in part because there are those other options you keep mentioning, and because with cars in general getting so fast SM just looks outdated. I’m not solidly for or against the idea, but I support discussions ahead of collapse.

That's yours.. 100%..  Ironically balancing the class to the least common of all cars which just so happens to be your version of Sm.     

 

Never been one to be concerned with the bashing or been one to hide behind anything  If my sole purpose or even the primary purpose of this discussion was that, I would post it. I have been building an FD RX7 for STU, so that should be a car to go "fast" if that is the goal.  Going "faster" in Sm while would be an end result if we pulled plates is NOT my main reasoning..  If we are being honest with no agendas, its hard to deny that we are balancing the cars to the lowest common denominator and to a version of car that is not raced nearly as much as the NB chassis anymore. It is bass ackwards .  Should it stay that way? For how long?

The racing will be better with less or zero plates...  Anyone who doubts this should take their plate out one day and go out.. The balance and control ability of the car is MUCH better. The number of NA cars showing up at the HST races is so small it shouldn't have any effect. Will the racing be better for the NB cars---yes.  Should we go down this road, as the major and REG races will need to include the standard SM package..

Unfortunately, as an NA owner, I am of the opinion that the die has been cast in this discussion.  Mazda's announcement of the Spec MX5 will lead to the change, long term, in SM.  My guess is that in 3-5 years it will be the NC and NB in SM, gone will be the NA.  The clubs will support the Spec MX5 program for many reasons.  Then this thread will be about how to create parity between those two cars......give us something to talk about for a long time! 

 

The crystal ball is getting clearer and this thread is probably going to change, but the long term outcome for the NA won't....IMHO.

They succeeded in putting a ~15HP/9.3% reduction on the NBs, what makes you think they can't do the same percentage on the MZR while returning the NBs to their full performance potential?

 

185HP == 167HP with a plate (using the same relative percentage reduction in power)

common sense is always a good  place to start    

 

Spec MX5 is a single car class, designed that way.. They want it to be more spec and less variables than sm.. No other cars are coming in.  If I had to guess, maybe the ND cars at some point, reluctantly? Much like the 99 up cars in SM but wont be bringing in older cars

 

 

167 is a far cry from unrestricted NB Sm. Less some serious work,  NB cars are not getting to 167

Instead of dumping the SM NA class car which is keeping Jim and friends from having a faster SM, how about following the basic Production car philosophy of having each Mazda Miata by generation have it's own spec line/class, NA, NB, NC,ND and run in the same race group. This comment isn't so that everyone gets a trophy. It's a win win for every Spec Miata owner. Of course with that being said, what Mazda wants, Mazda will get.
