No one at the track is talking much so i thought I would. I was at the track today for the Qualifying Race today. The NASA format has changed at least from my last Champs were they are just doing one qualifying Race. So all the work you do in qualifying up to that point is to get your grid spot, so the Q Race is one where you have to be somewhat smart about it because if you spin or get knocked off track your screwed.

Today Thomas, Drago and Davis looked like they have a little more than those behind them, but it was hard to tell because there was yellow today that limited what could be done to try and gap the pack. If you have not seen the video they did a pretty good job on  coverage as they had an in-car camera, the normal track cameras and a drone camera which was interesting.

Both Kyle and Ryan Roberson, (That is Roberson, pronounced like "Robber-son" coming through the door), if the announcer is reading this, were right there and have been all week. Matthew Dirks in an NA car is incredibly quick. For those always crying about the NA, at this track, its a weapon. Looks like he comes up a little short at the end of the back straight but that is about it.

I really can't pick a winner, I have to many friends in the top 6, but i think it comes down to who can manage the tires in the last ten min. of the race. If you have never driven the Toyo there, after driving the Hoosier its just plain scary, you struggle to get the car to turn and you have to hang it out a little to get the car to turn.

I was really impressed with Mark Gibbons, I watched his video today and for a guy who has never been to this track he was driving a pretty good line and i would expect to see him come up through the field.

In closing Thomas is fast, Drago comes with a fast car and race craft, Davis is just consistent. We used to call Hille the Zombie because when he was behind you he would just keep coming, Davis may get that title this year.

For a change the weather at Mid-O is going to dry and cool, so that is something New.

The only thing i saw in tech today was a 99 came in with the intake tube wrapped in foil, oops.

Good luck guys, drink some beer tonight and come out flying in the AM.

Big congratulations to Jim for adding the NASA championship to his long list of accomplishments. The spectacular early pass put him in control and he managed the race perfectly from there. Big thumbs up to Jared for keeping the pressure on to the end but it’s a tough place to pass a car with equal or better power. And congratulations to the caveman for getting on the podium, I hope there is some video coming of that battle.

Congrats to the Podium finishers Jim, Jared and Kyle. It was a fun race to watch. No big gaps with the front pack, clean racing all the way through the field a few yellows, I think all is good in tech.

Anyone know how to find the link to the SM race video?

I must admit I had some reservations about attending this years NASA Champs.  However in my warped mind and way of thinking.. I felt that both Mid Ohio and NASA owed me one as I lost championships that I truly feel I could have won to both.  So against advice of many, I decided to give it another try and attempt to check off the last box on my list that I had not won in SM.  Twelve years after my first NASA Champs I was finally able to check that event off my list.

We had a small but fun group this weekend, It was Anthony Zappone, Mark Gibbons, Kyle Webb and myself under our tent.  My crew guys Mike and Dean with Richie from Old Dogs.  The event went pretty smooth. However, the track, set up, handling and tires were a royal PITA. Getting the car to handle and figuring out what tires to run was a real science project.  Kyle went from really good on test day to off the mark in qualifying, but back on for race day. To his credit, he kept his head in the game. We struggled with Gibbons car most of the weekend, but got it right for the race and he drove up to tenth. Anthony's car seemed on rails early on and stayed that way. Pretty amazing that a kid 15 years old can be as calm and laid back as Anthony, I think he will start running closer and closer to the front. He is very close right now. I was impressed.  My car was a handful for a few sessions until I found the correct tires and re set up the car. It was very good in qualifying, so much I didn't risk more time on the tires or potential set up issues in Q2. Equally as good in the qualifying race.

The guys at NASA,  Will Faules, Xavier Calderone, Chris Cobetto and Jeremy Croisett  all went out of their way to make me feel welcome. Many, myself included had some pretty harsh words and criticisms. I think some of them were as surprised to see me back. It was never awkward and it was not fake, they were happy I came back and they went out of their way to insure it was not awkward at all. To their credit, they fixed many of the issues many of us complained about with the tech procedure and the tear down was far more what I was accustomed to. The atmosphere tech was lite, which was a welcome change.  I doubt I will be back for Utah, but if the next version rolls east.. I was pushing Daytona and NOLA pretty hard for no reason other than it is fun and there are things for family and friends to do besides watch racing.  Not much going on at Mid Ohio or Miller IMO for anyone but the racers.

Thanks to my guys for the work they put in on the car, it was flawless and very fast.  Thanks to Will Faules for countless messages back and forth, honest and frank conversations over the last year or so and encouraged me to come and assured me I would be treated fairly and I was.  Thanks to Mark Sanzenbacher from Toyo, again answering countless texts and emails about tire questions as I really only run Toyos once a year.  Thanks to Chris Cobetto.. The best race director I have ever had at the NASA Champs.. We had one meeting period! Amazing for NASA. He is a racer and he gets it.  Thanks to Chris Haldeman, He gave me the tires I qualified on and the ones I won the race with and always a good ear for set up up questions.  Thanks to Danny and Chris at G Lock, simply the best brake pads I have ever run, period!  Thanks to my wife Alison for allowing me to play these silly kids games :)  Thanks to all the friends and customers for years of friendship and support.

The race.. My car had been on rails the last two sessions and felt when I got around Jared for the lead, it was going to get real boring, real fast. Unfortunately for me, the contact at the start knocked my front toe off pretty severely and my car that been on rails was now a handful and tight as can be from the entry to madness to the entry of thunder valley. I had to manage that section not to burn the tires off which I did.  I just put my head down and made no mistakes after taking the lead and managed the race.

Congratulations to my long time friend Kyle Webb, One of the best weekends I have seen him race. Solid P3 at a Championship event , Congrats to Jared Thomas as well for his second place finish.

No fancy editing.. but here is part one and part two of my in car.

Race starts at 7 min mark.

Disclaimer... the video is pretty boring

Thanks for the ride.    Was that an attempted intimidation side draft at 17 seconds?

So the lead up to the event was interesting... all year I had no plans of going to Nationals. Maybe 2 Months ago I started looking for a way to get the car there, thinking it might be fun and Mid Ohio would be a track worth ticking off my bucket list. About a month ago my champoinship competitor in SM TX, Phillip decided he could make the trip up to Mid O, so we arranged for transport and trackside support from a buddy of ours and were set up to go. A week before the event, our transport had a family emergency and couldn't make it. We both went through our rolodexes and after coming up empty, Phillip goes out and bought a trailer, gutted it so it could fit both of our cars, we took fellow Texas SM homie Bill's spares up, and Phillip made the trip to Mid O with all of our stuff by himself. After getting pulled over twice on the way up there (trailer looked like a mobile meth lab special, bullet holes and all. Cop thought our Miatas were cute.), he finally rolled in midnight before Thursday morning practice. Thursday morning we hustled into track, to drivers meeting, and miraculously were on grid in time for first session... despite both of us being worse for the wear.

After our first session Thursday our expectations were tempered. We both had dreams of top 5 finishes but... Mid Ohio is tough, tough, tough. Tire wise we were both on scrubs and weren't sure if it was fast or not, Setup wise, I wasn't confident or consistent enough to mess with it without improving myself first. We were both about 2 seconds off of the fastest guys and figured we had some room to improve by figuring out a few corners. Thursday at the last session I had some fuel pickup problems which we thought was a pump issue. After having George Clos sauter up a new one for us (thanks again buddy!) we realized it was a relay. Unfortunately when we went to test this I, like a dumbass did not realize the car was in gear and proceeded to damn near run over my dad and bump draft Phillip's car in the paddock. A scary yet fortunately relatively innocent reminder to never stop thinking in the paddock... even if it is 10pm and you're a few beers in.

So Friday we roll out to qualify and end up 14 in the first session. Phillips a spot ahead. Cutting down the time to the leaders to a second and a half now, but so are all the other out of region guys. I'm finally consistent enough to try some setup stuff, dial in some cross before the second session, which seems to help but since the track as a whole is slower we stay the same position. It was funny to see the out of region guys slowly catch up throughout the weekend... once again, Mid O is not easy.

Saturday qually race is when I finally feel like I got the track figured out. Phillip and I were slowly and patiently moving up the field together with him leading and us picking folks off until I made a mistake and went 4 off heading into Thunder Valley. We lost touch and I wasn't able to follow him through on his next two passes. To make matters worse on the last lap I got greedy and tried an inside pass for 12th... The passing car held strong and two other cars go on his bumper and freight trained by him so I fell back to 15th. This led me considerably annoyed with myself as Phillip was starting in 10th and I had divorced myself from my drafting partner getting greedy.

Before the championship race, I hopped in the car to take it to grid and realized we had no power brakes. After the quickest brake bleed of all time (just found a tiny bit of air out the LR) it felt a bit better and I scrambled to grid with 5 minutes to go, praying that the problem was fixed. Thankfully,, the brakes firmed up on the outlap. Assuming we goofed up bleeding the brakes the night before...

The championship race went really nicely. After the initial scrum I ended up on Phillips bumpers by the time the first caution came out, which let us get back up to the 2nd gaggle of cars. We worked our way up together to 8th and 9th when he unfortunately was on the wrong end of contact. I slipped into 8th, on J Casey's bumper for the last restart. On the last lap of the race I got a nice run out of keyhole and thought I would try to bump Casey and myself around Dan Williams who was in 6th. Didn't have enough oomph to pull it off so I tried to go outside of casey going into Madness and decided to bail before the apex at the right hander. Ended up in 8th, which all things considered, was within my goal of a top 10. I think we had a top 5 car at the end of the weekend... just not sure we had the driver consistency for it. Mid Ohio is a tough place to pass, I really needed to have stuff figured out on qualifying day and things didn't click for me until qualifying race day. With as tight as things were, working your way through the field in traffic is a big ask.

Huge thanks to Phillip for pulling out all the stops to get us there, Chris Shaffer and his parents for being awesome pit buddies, and especially my dad for being an awesome crew chief despite my attempts to kill him. Thanks to Will and everyone at NASA for annoying me until I finally got out there... I absolutely loved Mid Ohio and the area. Us Texas boys are already plotting for our attack at the top 5 at Utah next year.

Mid Ohio can Eat a D*** as far as I'm concerned!!! It was a tough trip, one I won't forget anytime soon. BTW I had 2 blowouts and a missing rim and tire on the way home.

If anyone is interested in a rolling meth lab, I have the perfect donor trailer for sale!
