Hey all!

I am new to the forum and to SM as well as racing! I did try a search but didn't come up with anything.

I am sure this has been asked before: If I purchase a 1999 CA Miata, can I remove the pre cat per SM rules?

Thanks

Before you do anything, download the SM rules and read them. They aren’t very long but even without remembering the details you will get a good idea what can and should be done. If it isn’t in there, it isn’t allowed (other than a few generic things like seat belts). There are a few outdated things in the suspension section which effectively give you multiple options, but in each case you almost certainly want the newest option. When in doubt, ask of course.

To your current question it is very clearly spelled out, the stock manifold and downpipe must be used and can’t be modified, coated or wrapped (there is an exception for cleanup of NA parts), cats and mufflers may be removed, one muffler may be added. Pipe diameter is limited. But don’t rely on my description, read the rules.

As a beginner you might also do well to get the SM build book from Advanced Autosports.

On the 99/2000 you can get ride of the California exhaust manifold and and use the otherwise alternative stock exhaust manifold and down tube.

Thanks Frank! Apparently the different manifold & downpipe in the CA cars of those years was a gap in my knowledge. Always glad to learn more. Hopefully the rest of my advice is helpful.

BTW LowlySlows, Welcome!
