Has anyone tried the Goodyear DOT race tires on an SM?

I don’t recall anyone mentioning Goodyear’s return to the DOT race tire market. Apparently their first release was exactly our size and now they are introducing more. At $175 WITHOUT a contract they are already $100/set cheaper than purple. Does anyone have more info on them?

i tried them back in 2010-12, they were really good then

As I recall they pulled out of the market after that, so it would be interesting to test/compare these new tires against the SM 7.5s. Not that I believe SCCA would dump Hoosier but at least try to build a little leverage for the next contract negotiation.

Also I ha e driven them. They are way faster than hoosier sm7.5’s aka bad for the class. They are more like hoosier a7’s. So stickers every session to be fast

You mean to say their marketing department LIES???

Actually, I wonder if these are exactly what you ran, the RCMD compound?

I am not sure if this is the current compound that I drove.
Doesn’t matter. We are purple for life in the scca

i tried them back in 2010-12, they were really good then

ran them back in late 2008 ish in both SM and ITA

 

ran GSC's in showroom stock prior on front drive RSX's and they too were a fantastic tire. 

 

unfortunately after bob schaffer from goodyear retired, so did the drive within the company to "go after" sportscar racing.  they had a short stint with SRF but that did't go well nor last.

 

Hoosier is a company that only sells racing tires.  sure continental owns them, but practically everything is the same as it was before.  they're an aggressive company that knows they need to sell racing tires and to keep their contracts, will be equally aggressive with sanctioning bodies to remain.

 

the other companies sell street tires.... thus do not have the same focus on amateur racing

 

in short.....Haldeman is right.  Hoosier is here to stay plain and simple.

in short.....Haldeman is right. Hoosier is here to stay plain and simple.


Regardless of what’s best for members. Things should never be allowed to get to that point or even the appearance of it. It gives too much power to the wrong side and we invariably pay the price.

Since I'm local, I helped Goodyear with track testing the new tires last year. The lap times are comparable to the 7.5s, though the feel is a bit different. They were very consistent over a race distance. No significant fall-off in 2 or 3 heat cycles, I did not get to run them beyond that.

They seem to have a different philosophy on tire construction than Hoosier. The carcass isn't quite as stiff so a slightly less direct feeling, but they seem to be lighter. No or fewer steel belts?

 

I liked them and would have no problem if we switched, club politics not withstanding.
