What do people do to fix this problem?  Product?  Technique/Tricks/Tips?

Send them to Gator Axle in Florida is my fix.

http://www.gatorracingaxles.com/

There's an up-front cost to rebuild the axle with a commensurately cheaper "rebuild" price after that.

Got 2 pair of mine done a few years back and it was a (surprising) week turn-around for them.

I shipped the two pair in FedEx tube boxes cut-down to fit properly lengthwise; one axle per box with two boxes taped together.

It was not a cheap shipment as a retail customer but they seemed to be the safest way to do it while not exceeding package weight limits.

Is it then inner or the outer boot? the inner is easy the outer you have to work at it. Its rare that they fail.

Why did it tear? Is it dry and showing cracks in other places or still in good shape other than one spot? Don’t laugh, but I have repaired CV and steering rack boots in-place with good cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). They come in different thicknesses at hobby shops and you can even get a little pump-spray bottle of fluid to make them set faster. Talk to an old guy familiar with them about which would be best for rubber but I’ve used the medium to thicker. Of course the mating surfaces must be clean but a bit of brake clean on a rag works for that. I’ve put many miles even on street cars with lots of suspension travel (which is what stresses them) without the glue joint failing. It’s cheap and easy and if it doesn’t last you can still pull it apart to replace the boot.

Thanks for posting responses everyone.  My right rear outer axle boot got torn in a wreck at the June Sprints.  I Gorilla Taped it (yes, I'm serious) for the Sunday race...by the end, I had grease all over the place.  Very sketchy under braking.

I was looking for a quick fix to get the car ready for Watkins Glen.  I actually tried to install a Dorman split boot...that was a mess with the Super Glue.  Gave up, and installed an old axle with intact boots.  Worked fine.

The easiest way to do it is to take apart the inner boot, and assembly its serviceable and then slide the outer boot all the way across the shaft to the outer side. The outer side can be taken apart and re assembled but its a pain in the butt. I would just run your spare and have a shop rebuild the bad one over the off season.

Yup...that's what's happening now.
