I'm actually about to change my slave cylinder. According to miata.net threads, one of the symptoms of a failing slave is black fluid. Mine is original and does require a couple of pumps of the clutch pedal at startup to engage the gears. I replaced the clutch master a few months ago.
Dave at Advanced Autosports has a nice braided clutch line that makes bleeding simpler.

Also, if you don't know how new the Slave Cylinder is, replace it. That's alway's the first think I do on every NA I have ever bought.
