The shifter housing on my 1.6l was broken completely off when I was hit last year. I'm getting ready to put the driveline in the new car and want to swap shifter housings. I have a spare transmission that has an intact shifter housing, but the gearbox is no good for racing anymore. I want to swap the housing to my race transmission. So I started disassembly and got to the point where the the shift lever arm and lever arm end are atteched by a roll pin. What is the easiest/safest way to remove the roll pin? Typically you can drive them out, but it seems you can only access one side of the shaft. Do I need to drill it out? Thanks,

The roll pin will come out. But the shift rod must be held in the 3-4 neutral gate. If not, it will jam up while still partially inserted.

Is there an easy way to hold the lever centered over 3-4 N? Can I get a pair of vice grips on the lever arm? Didn't seem to be much room in there. The pin will come out the back with enough room? Or am I just way over analyzing this?

The pin will come out the back side only if the shift gate is in the correct spot. You will be able to keep it in place with the punch

I have disassembled the shifter housings for both transmissions. I made sure that I was in the 3-4N for my spare transmission. But I was unable to get the good transmission out of gear because of the broken housing. How do I get it back in neutral? I checked that it is not stuck in reverse using the short screw driver in the reverse light switch opening and it appears to not to be.
